  1. I've been using 2 WD 500G external hard drives, one on each of 2 of my 3 VIP 211k receivers. Both are powered by an AC power source, both work great. I paid $75 for one (in 2015) and $50 for the other (in early 2016) off Amazon. Make sure the WD Hard drive has plenty of air flow around it, since they tend to heat up and will malfunction if hot during recording or playback, but if adequately cooled they have worked fine. The Dish setup fee is a one time deal and additional hard drives do not have an additional fee.
  2. Ferry service in Alaska

    Valdez works. We boarded at Skagway to Haines to Juneau to Sitka to Ketchikan and finished at Prince Rupert, on our return from Alaska in 2013 with our 21' B+, spent 2-3 nights in each port. We visited Whittier on our way to Tok from Valdez. That visit took about an hour on a rainy and foggy day.

    We did the reverse ferry route in 2013 Skagway 5 nights then by ferry to Haines 2 nights, then ferry to Juneau 3 nights, then by ferry to Sitka 3 nights, then ferry to Ketchikan 3 nights, then on to Prince Rupert. Personally I felt the Inside Passage via ferry and seeing those locations was more impressive than Denali.

    If you are close to the 1/2 mark tank of fuel at Muncho Lake, fuel up. We waited 4 years ago and paid the most per gallon of our entire trip at the Laird Hot Springs fuel stop which was US$7.28 converted liters to gallons. Muncho Lake is beautiful and cold, we stayed at The Muncho Lodge Campground with full hookups. The old lodge had been torn down and since then it appears to have been renamed Strawberry Flats Campground.

    We have been at a KOA in Indiana since mid-March as my wife recovers from back surgery. With the prospect of cold weather and no on site LP fill, without tearing down our motorhome, I opted for a adding a Marshal Stay Longer valve assembly before we left Texas. I purchased a 30# LP cylinder and have had it filled 3 times since arriving. The 1st time at the KOA for a standard 30# tank fee of $38.44. the next 2 fills were at a TSC about 8 miles away @ between $12.50-$13.00 each time. Our motorhome still has over 3/4 tank of propane from our last fill, before arriving. The only additional thing I would like for the Marshall valve assembly to have a check valve so the 30# cylinder could be removed for filling without the on board tank having to be shut off or removing the LP hose and capping the valve port for the external tank.
  7. This past year 61 stays..49 different locations, around 7800 miles on RV. Since 10-01-2008..507 stays in 85770 miles. Lost 1st 3 years of records in computer crash during 9/08 and yes I back up every time the program is used now, often on 2 different USB drives.
  8. 2-2-2 = basically why be in a big hurry for us. There is a lot of country to see so why rush through it? When you stop for a couple of days, look around you may be surprised by what you find. In by 2 usually means plenty of spots left, unless you are in a heavy tourist area, plus you will be parked and semi-safe, when all the weekenders come and bottle up the roads trying to park after 6PM.

We only make reservations well in advance in Virginia where our daughter's family lives, since it often books up and a COE park in Mississippi that is a hot spot when we travel there for my family's reunion. Other than that we call ahead after lunch on the day of arrival. This has worked well for us for 12 years of fulltiming.

    Don't know about State Farm, but we've banked with Wells Fargo, with our Dakota Post (formerly Alternative Resources) address for 12 years now. When we set up our SD address Doughterty Insurance who were in the same building as AR. We had Progressive Direct at the time and switched to them as the agent of record with little additional cost to us, when we purchased fulltimers insurance. Then a few years later when Progressive made a 40% jump (w/o any claims) they found us a much better rate with GMAC for the same coverage.

    No sense being here after 13+ years....this is awful, someone doesn't deserve a hug. Off to RV.net, IRV2 and FMCA forums won't have to sort through the clutter at those places. Also what's with the post count?
  13. New class B forum

    Still have the B+, which as usual is in storage for the winter, as we sit on our S Texas lot in our Phaeton. Getting ready to head for Indiana Sunday AM. Scoittiemom has back surgery in Indy March 24th. Will be at KOA E for at least a month.
  14. Advance reservations

    The only reservations made in advance is at a COE park near my family's reunion site, that I make 6 months ahead. Other than that the KOA close to our daughter's home about 2 months out since it is a heavy tourist and college area. I usually call about two hours before our arrival in an area to check on availability as we travel. Has worked well for 11 years of full timing.
  15. Ferry to Alaska

    Don't forget the Ferry stops along the way. In 2013 we returned south via the ferry system. On our 10 days off and on the ferries, our stops exploring Ketchikan, Sitka, and Juneau, I found more interesting than "the mountain" that all go to see. By the time we had traversed Icefields Parkway in the Rockies and the Alaska Highway, to me the terrain and wildlife basically looked the same. Our longest ferry leg was 23 hours from Ketchikan to Prince Rupert where we picked up Highway16 headed east to Indiana. Now after the trip, if we go again we would also stop at Wrangel and St Petersburg on the Marine Highway System for a few days each. Our trip was over 15,000 miles and 79 days from start to finish. Also we highly recommend "The Milepost" and Mike and Terri Church's "Traveler's Guide to Alaska Camping" as great tools in planning your trip. We boarded The Marine Marine Highway at Skagway, got off at Haines (saved a couple hundred miles driving and it took only about an hour on the ferry), Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, for a few days each, before ending up at Prince Rupert. The only reservations we had for the trip were for the Ferries which my wife made in February before we left Indiana on May 20th.
