We are familiar with BLM land in the west. What are the choices in the eastern states?

Since you mention BLM, I assume by boondocking you mean something other than staying at Camp Walmart. There are National Grasslands in th midwest and National Forests across the country that allow dispersed camping in some areas. Some also have drycamping campgrounds. State Wildlife Management Areas, State Fishing Lakes and Fishing Access Areas may allow camping. Some states have season restrictions and some require that you have a fishing or hunting license. Florida WMAs are popular boondocking spots in the winter. Some state parks and state forests allow dispersed camping while others have drycamping campgrounds. Identifying the particular states and areas of the state you are interested in will likely get you more specific information.

The Florida WMAs (Wildlife Management Areas) are interesting places to boondock. They have variable rules depending upon the hunting seasons etc. They do have several areas and some of them have sizeable open areas where solar works well. Most of them are free or require a $27 dollar permit good for any and all of the areas. The biggest downer is that hunters can bring in an RV (or tent) and leave it parked for the season. So it may look like a lot of RV users, but most are not occupied any given day.

There are also WMDs (Water Management Districts) that have free boondock camping. The biggest disadvantage we found was that they limited the duration to about 5 days at most of the sites.

There are lots of places to boondock, if I understand how to boondock. Or perhaps not.

There are lots of dispersed camping sites in the state and national forests. Facilities range from absolutely nothing up to hot showers and flush toilets. Often no hookups of any kind. Sometimes a central water pipe. Some have water electric hookups. If this is boondocking then I have several websites that list these places. If that is not boondocking, then I won't waste my time listing the websites. We called it camping. I also reccomend a directory that lists many of these various campgrounds and dispersed camping places. I have a good one.

Get the "Days End" list, available only to Escapees members. Days End lists lots of places in the East to camp for free or low cost. Not nearly as many as the West though. If you travel a lot and like city parks, county parks, National Forest sites, etc it is well worth the cost of the Escapees membership, just to get the list.

Deleted all links as it has been pointed out that I do not know what boondocking is and since my links had far too many "non-boondocking" sites within them I have decided to delete them from this post. Since I do not know what boondocking is and has been rather nastily pointed out to by another, I will also refrain from posting in the boondocking forum. I do not like the Boondocking Police here.

According to "mellow mike's" narrow definition of boondocking:

For the purposes of this poll, boondocking is defined as primitive, dispersed, or wilderness camping out in the boondocks without hookups and doesn't include parking overnight at places like Walmart or casinos or dry camping at campgrounds.
