Atlanta, to Charleston, then north on US 17 to Cedar Island, then the ferry to the Outer Banks(Ocracoke), then north to the Norfolk area as in the previous post.
Getting the atlas out again to have a look, ed. Thanks .

Too funny. I recommend James Island all the time. I'm staying there for 5 days in May before heading south along the coast. Only problem with recommending it so many times is that I can't get my favorite spot even this far ahead. I wish they'd expand the campground. Have to reserve months out, now. When we first started going there, we didn't even worry about a reservation.

I couldn't open the link to the state park near Myrtle Beach, but I can look it up. We were to Cape Hatteras years ago, so it would be nice to revisit. Again, thank you. It's nice to have a few alternatives. We took a ferry to Okracoke years ago. It was in the summer. While we waited for the ferry, I got out to check out the horses while waiting and found out what "greenies" are. I couldn't get inside the little store that was there fast enough. Smack dab in front of the door was an insect bite medication and prevention display! Boy they hurt like the dickens and itched like crazy--they didn't sting, they BIT! Think I'd have better luck in April.

If you plan on taking the ferry to the Outer Banks fron Cedar Island better make reserverations WELL in advance unless you are riding a motorcycle. They rate first on/ first off due to size. 252-225-7411 for more info and reservations.
Thanks for this information.

Thanks for this information.
You can overnight, for free, on the Cedar Island side of the ferry. There is a really nice beach area that is very easy to spot. It will be on your right as you approach the ferry terminal. We stayed there last year. Or. If you arrive after the last ferry has left for the day, you can simply overnight in the ferry parking lot then catch the first ferry in the morning. The beach is nicer though.
Enjoy:

PS
I may look for a campground around Newark or maybe Philadelphia as it seems like I could follow the coastal route suggested. Any thoughts?
