I am having trouble finding out how to insure a MDT in Iowa. Insurance agent is telling me since truck I am looking at is considered a "semi" it requires commercial insurance. I told her it was for towing a RV and was "Not for Hire" but the companies she writes for are saying different. I am looking for information on other insurance companies to check or what other information to tell agent so insurance is reasonable on a MDT or HDT if I decide to go HDT route. Anybody in Iowa with expereince with this??

This a big advantage an HDT offers. Iowa will license it as a Class C motorhome if you can satisfy four (I think) of sevemn requirements. It has been a while since we qualified but the ones I remember are sleeping quarters, separate electrical generation with motor off, toilet with holding tank, refrigerator, fresh water with holding tank, cooking ability. We added a Yamaha generator, fridge and microwave and we now pull our fifth wheel with a Class C conversion, costing about $100/year for license plates (2000 Volvo). Insurance is reasonable as an RV, if added to existing policy.
Not all who wander are lost...but, odds are a few of us must be.

We were from Iowa but went to SD. But then we are full-time RVers too. Might try Farm and City out of Forest City, IA. We went with them. Don't know if it will work if you aren't a full-time RVer, but can always ask. clicky
