I had to buy a new magnetic mount cb antenna base, I picked one up at a Loves truck stop. I was checking it out about 6 months after I bought it and the coax cable was falling apart. The cheap coax was made from steel wire with a copper coating on it. I repaired it but I want a better cable, someone told me that you can get coax with a braided center wire. Anyone know anything about this type of cable?

Just get yourself some rg-8x coax or rg 213u. I use that for all my ham antennas

I don't think he would want to use 213 on a cb mag mount antenna.

The problem is can you get to the connection at the antenna so you can un solder the old coax and replace the complete length? The mag mounts I have seen, have a fully molded base and you can't reach the termination point.

I have been able to open it up and repair the coax but I want to change the coax to a better quality cable. I was looking at a 4 magnet base on ebay, that might be a better idea.

I'd just get a Wilson 1000 or a K40 get it tuned for minimum SWR. Then give the cheapo away. ;)

The antenna is a center load K40 trucker, no complaints about the antenna just the mag mount.

Are you having problems with the mini K40 staying where you put it?
I never used the small ones, just the full sized models,(big magnets).

Rat Shack has some stuff called "mini foam" that is actually pretty good coax.
I've used that to replace mag mt wires many times, get a nice silver plated connector and the reducing adapter to fit the coax, to go with it. ;)
Don't buy their other stuff though. :P
stay tuned
