Want to make a difference in a disaster situation? Waiting until a disaster happens is too late! Join the DOVEs and get the training that will prepare you to help the American Red Cross when disaster strikes! Whether it is an earthquake, a tornado, a flood, or a wildfire--volunteers have to be trained and certified in advance to be eligible to be deployed. The DOVEs need you and your skills to fine tune with American Red Cross Disaster Services Training that fellow Escapee RVers can provide. Minimal fees will be charged to cover training supplies but in only three days potential DOVEs, new DOVES, and experienced DOVEs can get several training classes completed.
The DOVE BOF (Disaster Operations Volunteers Escapees) is providing three days of training for DOVEs and Potential DOVEs in the warm desert climate of Arizona this January.
We are going to have some Red Cross Disaster Services training classes and a get together in Quartzsite Monday through Wednesday January 16-18, 2012. We'll be meeting at the Isaiah 58 Project Church at 100 S Moon Mountain Ave in Quartzsite. Classes will start at 9AM – the schedule will be on the DOVEs website (www.dovebof.org). Anyone interested should contact Debbi Criswell at president@dovebof.org or Richard and Rose Marie Hartman at training@dovebof.org for more information. Get ready to help us help others in disasters! We need you!

We hope to see you there, Joe and Linda. Be sure and contact Richard and Rose Marie Hartman or Debbi Criswell to register for the classes you may want. Classes have to have enough interest in order to be taught. We'd love to see you there:)

That is terrific, Rollie and Janet. Is Nevada still there at the Corpus Christi Chapter? The DOVEs will be offering training on January 16th through the 18th at the Isaiah 58 Project Church, 100 Moon Mountain Ave. in Quartzsite. This will provide an opportunity to complete several classes in a short period of time with experienced DOVEs teaching the classes. Be sure and register early via training@dovebof.org to make sure they have materials for you. They are also having a pot luck on Thursday, Jan. 19th at noon on Plomosa Road, approximately 7 miles north on highway 95. They will have signs to follow.
My husband and I were there last year, but this year we will already be on the Gulf Coast of Texas by that time.
I look forward to meeting you!
Welcome to the DOVEs!

Wish we could offer classes everywhere! Fortunately, more and more are offered on line. It is terrific to register for a class on SABA and jump right in knowing that your class participation should just show up automatically on your record. As with everything else in life, be sure and check to make sure all the classes you have taken are reflected on your SABA record. W.C. & I had a wonderful tech that helped us pull all of our classes that we had taken around the country together on SABA so we were complete. Just be patient and work with the tech support until your record is complete and make sure your home chapter gets a copy of all your coursework. We routinely make a copy of class completion for ourselves to keep in our records AND send one to your home chapter just to keep everyone on the same page. With Red Cross' limited funding (just like the rest of us) fewer people are trying to take care of everything:)
Please post to the map so we can keep track of each other. The DOVEs are like a giant family with members all over the country caring about each others' welfare and being good neighbors to the world!
I am so proud to be a member of the DOVEs!
Be sure to friend the DOVEs on Facebook now.
Thanks, Steve, for being such a great DOVE!
Life is Good!
Merry Christmas, Everyone!

I have been reading about the DOVE's for a while now.
We are in Q for the winter and might attend if you can answer this question for us.
If you are trained and have to go to a disaster, do we have to pay for our own fuel to get there?

Hi Rollie and Janet!
Corpus Christi is a very "DOVE-friendly chapter" and should be fun! W.C. & I won't be in Quartzsite this year for training or for the Escapees' Happy Hours. We are in New Mexico for Christmas and will start south tomorrow for the Texas Gulf Coast. We had over 10 inches of snow for Christmas in Ruidoso and are anxious to get started for warmer weather. Hope you have a great time with the DOVEs! Q is a great opportunity for training and getting to know other DOVEs!
Sorry W.C. & I will miss you this time. Hope to get to meet you on the road:)

Hi Bluebird Bob!

You have a terrific opportunity to find out lots of answers to questions in Quartzsite since you will be there for the winter! The DOVEs are offering training and it is a great time to get to know the organization and what it is about first-hand.
As to your question--"If you are trained and have to go to a disaster, do we have to pay for our own fuel to get there?"--The short answer is "You never HAVE to go." Red Cross will ask you if you are willing to go and you consider how far
away you are from the disaster site and how that fits into your plans. Then you look at fuel costs--Red Cross will reimburse a DOVE for the price of one airplane ticket to the disaster site even if you and your fellow traveler are both DOVEs. If you are asked to be deployed, YOU decide if that will be enough to pay for your fuel or not. Some DOVEs want to go and will absorb any extra cost. Other DOVEs figure carefully the cost of going to the disaster site and how long it will take to get there before deciding. For example, my husband and I belong to the Elkhart, Indiana, Red Cross Chapter and were called to deploy for the Alabama tornadoes last April. We are full-timers and were in Lubbock, Texas, at the time. The price of fuel was really high and we knew it would take us at least two days to get there. We knew that Red Cross days are long--sometimes 12 hour days or longer--and we would be tired when we arrived. We agreed to be deployed, but chose to fly rather than take our rig to the disaster for those reasons.
There are lots of folks who will be in Q who are experienced DOVEs and that will be a great chance to talk to some of them and get training if you want it. We are offering several classes, but again--you CHOOSE what areas you want to be trained for in addition to the basic classes. We love the organization, but I guess you recognize that or I would never be their secretary:)
Hope I have answered your question well enough for you to decide what you want to do. Let me know if I can be of more help.

Hi Rollie41!
I'm so glad to hear that Navada is still in Corpus Christi! I just noticed on the DOVE site on Facebook this morning that Corpus is having a training opportunity in March and since my husband and I are heading south toward the Gulf Coast of Texas tomorrow, we will investigate which classes they may have available. We spent five weeks in the Phoenix area and drove over to Q just before Thanksgiving just for fun. We won't be there for the training this year, but give everyone our best if you go to the DOVE functions.
Nice to hear from you!
Enjoy Quartzsite! We'll miss being there this year:(

This sounds interesting to me. I am trained in writing and implementing disaster plans for small organizations all the way up to entire cities. I specialize in communications disaster preparedness.

I'm not much of a people person so I don't know how I'd do with helping individuals but I would like to offer my services to help communities prepare for the eventual.
