Are the gate-guard jobs retirees only? I can't see that they would allow families but at some point around the time we're just shy of 50 the last kid will head to college and a job like that would be ideal with the husband's security & military background.
We are not all retirees or snowbirds by a long shot. Success in this business keys on a good work ethic.
I love the job.

Thanks for the information. hubby said he is going to start making contact in the next couple weeks, just to feel out the odd chance that any of them might be open to a family with two teens and a tween. If not at least he'll have a few contacts for work after the younger kids are off to college and real life {oldest is moderate-high functioning aspergers, she may or may not be with us for the foreseeable future}

I have a blog that deals with gate guarding oil rigs in Texas. My best friend and I have been doing this near San Antonio for a few months and try to blog something every day. We have a page with information on how to apply. I hope this helps both the curious and the serious! Love to have you visit our pages.
So what is the link? Or are we just supposed to guess?

Opps... the bolg is: www.theforkintheroad.wordpress.com
My link
The blog isn't a journal, so you may want to scroll to look at pictures and read posts that particularly interest you. Heidi's post are almost always gate guarding specific. I'm a little more random. I blame it on the fact that I work the over night shift...

You mention 12 hour positions for singles. Are most of these positions 24/7 every day, all day?
Are there easy ways for a couple, for instance, to have a day or a part of a day off together, as in maybe a 24/6?
As a guard, are you armed?
I suppose I was wondering about little stuff like when a person would take a shower or stuff like that where they might be "indisposed". Seriously, people do have to have some down time sometime.
Maybe a "day in the life of" thing would give a bit of a picture.
