How is AARP/ The Hartford for RV insurance? I've got a good quote from them. Anybody here have a personal experience with claims or customer service with them?

I was with The Hartford for over ten years but changed to Progressive about eight months ago. We sold two cars and bought a new one, but the Hartford wanted to raise our auto insurance by $300 a year! I was already disappointed at their lack of Internet support, and this was enough to drive me to a new company. We are now with Progressive through USAA, and the premiums about 2/3 of the Hartford premiums. In summary, we were quoted ~$3400/yr for our towd and RV, and are now paying ~$1900 to USAA/Progressive.

Can not comment on claims, never had any. wink.gif Customer service was good about ten years ago but was on a decline.

Have had Hartford for about 15 years for motorhome. Dropped them for cars due to better rates, but will keep for the RV. Claim handling excellent service and fair. Trip to Alaska cost them a lot, but no problem. The only thing they do not offer is to drop part of coverage if the RV is parked for an extended time. Also they offer "disappearing" deductible on colliision coverage.

When we retired, we tried to purchase auto, RV and house insurance from The Hartford. Got a letter back from them after filling out the application for insurance that we didn't have a high enough limit on our credit card, we thought $15000 was enough. Doesn't seem they really want to sell insurance to anyone that might have any out of the ordinary claims. Told them to bite the big one!

edmundo.packer,

First of all, a great. big, Escapees welcome! We are happy to have you as a member of our forum group. We will try to be as helpful as we can and hope that you become an active participant in the group.

On the insurance question, we first need to know if you are a fulltimer? If you you will need insurance with a fulltimer's clause which most insurance companies do not offer. Let me suggest that you use a couple of these insurance agencies that specialize in coverage for RVers as a place to compare.

RV Advantage

PoliSeek Insurance

Miller Insurance Agency

Thanks for your inputs everybody. Thanks for the links Kirk J . I’ll follow up on them. Since I plan to travel quite a bit in the trailer; reliability is a key issue now, as I don’t want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with no support. Please keep the information coming.

If you have not done so, consider also a good emergency road service as well. I can tell you from first hand experience that it can be just as important as any other kind of insurance and I will also suggest that you start with Coach-Net.

I’ve been with AARP/The Hartford for over 8 years now and find them very good. The rates are lower and service better than most of the other insurance companies.

We have Hartford (AARP), for our house and 2 cars - they were half of what Allstate was charging us for the exact same coverage. Several years ago, we had a bad rain storm and a tree fell on part of the house and cedar fence (didn’t damage the house much but took out the fence!). We called Hartford up the following day (Wednesday) and they had a guy out that Friday to inspect. By the end of the next week, we had a check in hand to take care of the damage AND to cut up and take away the tree. My S.O. has had 2 accidents - minor & not her fault, I should add and Hartford stepped up since the other drivers were not insured - no problems. We have been very pleased with Hartford and would recommend them.

So naturally, we looked to them for RV insurance. Trouble is, they don’t do full-timing and the coverage they do offer was alot more expensive than GMAC, which we ended up getting for the RV. For us, we’ve shopped Progressive, Geiko (?), Hartford and it seems, at least 3 others but GMAC had better rates - I think our annual premium is $1600 - not bad for full coverage, contents, etc. Also, GMAC will lower your rate while your RV is in storage - not being driven. We renewed for our second year with GMAC last week. Haven’t had any experience yet with claims (fortunately), so I can’t speak to how the may handle them... GMAC is recommended through Good Sam Club.
