i am looking at an MCI MC-9 with a 6v92t and 5 speed. it has just over 500k on it. Can anyone tell me the life expectancy of this motor? B50 rating i believe you call it? is this even worth looking at with those miles?

If the engine really has 500k miles on it then you should budget for at the very least sleeves and bearings. 4-stroke engines can go 700k to a million miles but the old 2-strokes are getting long in the tooth at 500k. To answer your 2nd question, if the engine really does have that many miles - it depends on the price. I did a major rebuild on an 8-92 last winter for around $17k. That included replacing a head and we used all genuine Detroit parts. You can probably rebuild a 6-92 with jobber parts for around $7500 or find a low time engine for maybe $2500. Its pretty easy to swap engines in a bus so pulling and replacing the engine is not as big a job as it may at first appear to be. There's some wicked deals on busses out there right now so make sure you know what the market really is and price your offer accordingly. -------------------- |

And you can figure to rebuild it every 200,000 miles or less.

Figure 150,000 to 250,000 miles per rebuild. The engine has been rebuilt at least once. If only once then its due. Rebuilds will run close to $2K per hole, plus blower rebuild for another $2K. Then figure on labor to load the block, magnsflux and clean the block, rebuilt turbo, etc. If you get out for less than $20K you're lucky these days. Low time engines are selling for $2-4K.
Don't forget to pull the radiators for inspection. Recore time! I sold a low time 6V92TA and HT740 combo for $3500 last year. New owner is happy as its running great. Bill -------------------- Bill & Lynn Baxter
