Is this a big dollar repair? I know they paint the thing gold for a reason, but is this just a 20 dollar gasket and a pain to get at it or is it a bigger deal? I pressure washed the engine prior to the Williston round trip, there is not alot of oil on the pan and 0nly 2 quarter sized spots on the floor after 2 weeks, so I'm not going to get too excited about it, 'cuz its way less drippy than my Dads old Screaming Jimmys.
I'm just wondering how big of a job is this, looks like the alternator and AC compressor perhaps the turbo and of course the air cleaner assembly will have to be removed. Thoughts? Should I just add a quart or gallon every couple of thousand miles? It didn't appear to show on the dipstick. -blizz -------------------- 2001 GMC 6500 3126 Cat 6spd long n low, 31' long will creep into a 9' Garage door.

blizz,
You know I am from the south, post me a picture! I think it is an o-ring seal, depends on which filter adapter it uses. -------------------- "Advice is when we ask a question we already know the answer to, but wish we didn't."

I don't think a Playboy photographer could get a good picture of that, do you have any CAT manuals that talk about it? I was told about it by my brothers employee who works for him pt, His real job is a diesel mech instructor there in Williston. He said that this plate attached the oil filter and motor mount, but the engine is dry above it and appears to leach down run back along the oil pan and drip all over the starter. -blizz This post has been edited by blizzardND: Nov 5 2009, 09:40 AM -------------------- 2001 GMC 6500 3126 Cat 6spd long n low, 31' long will creep into a 9' Garage door.

Bliz,
Looks like a gasket for that one and maybe some o-rings too for the oil ports. Check and make sure the turbo oil feed isn't the culprit. Here is what it looks like, bring it on down and I will do the labor for free!

No! mine is installed in my truck, with a bunch of crap in the way, and mine has oil leaking out of it. blizz just 20 quick questions... So its just that plate that looks about a foot long that the oil filter mounts to? what happens when that plate comes off? 5 gallons of oil all over the floor? Is this something that will cure itself if I ignore it? Ok I just had to ask that. any idea how much a shop would charge for fixing that? How long does it take to get to your free shop? Do you have acess to free fuel? :<) Ha thats funny! Not? Do you have a manual for that that I could get a scan of? good night everyone! -blizz -------------------- 2001 GMC 6500 3126 Cat 6spd long n low, 31' long will creep into a 9' Garage door.

Blizz,
I have a 60/40 mix of ATF and used engine oil in stock for FREE fuel, if interested...... It is about 12-14 bolts and the only oil you will lose is the contents of the filter and what is in the turbo pressure line, I think it may be the turbo line in the first place. It would drip on the mounting plate and run down it. That filter mounting is an odd place for a leak. I would guess it would take about 3hr to remove and reseal it,shop time would be 4hr I bet. The only manuals I have for the 3126 is in my CAT SIS, that is on a hard drive from my old laptop. I haven't needed to swap yet so I been putting it off. When you get ready to do it I can dig out some part numbers for you. Take me a picture of that side of your installed engine and I will tell you the fastest way to get to it. -------------------- "Advice is when we ask a question we already know the answer to, but wish we didn't."

Blizz, Pipe; I think I've identified the problem, that engine isn't painted BLUE! Its gold!! They painted it Gold! They told me to invest in GOLD!! so I keep investing and investing, someday I'll actually see a return. But If you have a big blue one that will fit, and would like to invest in Gold, I'll trade, I'll even throw in the leaky oil too. Oils going up also, so this might be a great trade. Have your broker call my broker. ( you know why they call them brokers? -the more I give him the broker I get) -blizz -------------------- 2001 GMC 6500 3126 Cat 6spd long n low, 31' long will creep into a 9' Garage door.

HaaaR! Blizz, all diesels gotta drip a little bit, they're like Harley's that way, gotta mark their territory. My broker can't afford a long distance call, he's broker than your broker, but not as broker as me!

blizz,
I will perform the swap for you, I have a "blue" one to put in there for you and it wouldn't cost you a nickel! I just need to keep the yellow one for my trouble! -------------------- "Advice is when we ask a question we already know the answer to, but wish we didn't."

Blizz,
Since you're looking for free service reference material, write down your engine's Serial Number and Arrangement Number (should be on a little silver or white tag somewhere on the engine), then go to ohe.cat.com and sign up for a free subscription to the online version of SIS (CAT Service Information System). No, you won't find a complete service manual -- that's reserved for the guys like Pipe that have the high-dollar subscriptions and a set of SIS DVDs -- but you will find a lot of useful information about your engine, like part numbers and exploded drawings of component groups, along with back copies of Truck Engine News and other reference materials. -------------------- Phil
