Hi,
I'm not sure if this subject has already been covered. Have not found it in the search feature..... Can a Texas class B license be renewed by mail even if a person is wearing eyeglasses for driving? In the past we always had to go to Texas for the renewal. The current FMCA Mag. states that it can be done by mail but doesn't mention the eyeglass situation. Sometimes the renewal is a PITA when we have to come from the Northwest. It would be easier to enclose a note from an Optometrist assuring that we have the right kind of glasses for driving. If this subject has already been covered, I apologize but I would still like to get some possible feedback. Thanks in advance.. |

I beleive you can do it one time even with eyeglasses IF you have not had a ticket since the last renewal. Danielle wears glasses and she renewed her A by mail. I don't wear glasses and renewed my A by Mail. Next time we have to go there....

Dave renewed his by mail. The reason for it being by mail is that you have to certify (a notarized signature) that you have an RV. As Jack mentioned, it is every other time that this can be done. Next time for Dave that will mean spending the winter in Texas so that we can renew 6 months before his birthday which is in August! Of course, by then, everything could change again.

Thank you both for your replies.
The problem I think is the class B license. |

What do you view as the problem with a B. A B is the same as an A and handled the same way. Unless the policy has changed you should be able to renew by mail. Download the forms and instructions. They were very explicit as to what you could do and under what circumstances.

Here's the web page with instructions for doing the mail renewal for both A and B. http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administratio...taryrenewal.htm
If you went to the online renewal and looked at the FAQ it says they must be renewed in person. I'm not sure why the disconnect, but often what one person in an agency knows doesn't filter down to everyone - especially in this area because CDLs can't be renewed by mail and a lot of people in the DMV don't know the difference. ANKEN... if you are referring to a "State required" class "B" drivers license.. it may be possible to renew by mail... I'm not familiar with Texas laws concerning NON-commercial license.
HOWEVER... if you are talking about a "COMMERCIAL" class B license, sometimes referred to as a "CDL".. then No, I don't believe it can be renewed by mail..... at least I was never allowed to renew my CDL in the almost 50 years I had it.. and I had a perfect driving record for the last 40 plus of those 50 years.. A class B "CDL" requires a medical exam form and depending on a person's driving record, it may also require taking the driving test and/or some parts of the written tests over again. The only reason I bring this up is because many folks think that a "CDL" and a "State Required" class "A" or "B" are the same thing.. but they are not.. best wishes, John -------------------- 1995 Prowler 30.5 w/one slide
1993 F-350 2007 KIA Spectra Carson City, Nevada TWO CENTS WORTH The story goes that a man died and was approached by the Devil who told him that he could buy his soul back for a dollar. The man searched his pockets and could only come up with 98 cent. While begging the Devil to forget the two cent he was short, an Angel happened by and hearing the Devil laughing, asked the man, "Would you mind if I put in my two cents ?" The Devil got so mad that he exploded in a puff of smoke and the man's soul was saved. The moral: Sometimes putting in your two cents worth makes a difference. JOHN "the cook" 1987 © |

John is correct. All classes of CDL must be renewed in person. I "assumed" the OP was talking about the exempt Class B in TX. IF the CDL is what is under discussion then it muct be renewed in person.

Thank you to everybody who took the time to write.
Hubby & I have a non commercial class B license. Have been told in the past that it can be renewed by mail as long as we don't have to wear eyeglasses for driving. I have asked this question because I read in the current FMCA Mag. that it can be done by mail and I thought that maybe the rules have been changed since our last renewal. Also, thanks for the link to the TX Dept. of Public Safety. What I read at one point on their site is that class A & B (non commercial) can be renewed by mail every other time. On another part of the same site it states however that all A & B licenses have to be renewed in person...... So, I was just wondering if anybody with eye glasses has renewed their non commercial class B license by mail lately. Again, I really appreciate all of your thoughts. |

As I said above - Danielle renewed her class A exempt in TX by mail. She wears glasses. Class A exempt rules are the same as class B exempt rules. The specific circumstances concerning glasses are on the instruction sheets for renewals.

If you are one of those who has trouble with the forced head lock of the machine at the DMV offices because of bifocals, or if vision in one eye is severely compromised, you can have your eye specialist fill out the form on the DMV web site and take that with you instead. Dave did that because he had a vein collapse in the center of his right eye - he has no straight ahead vision in that eye, just peripheral, but his other eye is great (or will be after he has that cataract removed next week).
