Should I "Renew" My Verizon Plan or . . .

Zulu

Recommended Posts

My 2-year Verizon contract expired in January. I don't really want to update my two smartphones nor my modem yet (which would start another 2-year contract).

However, I want to stay with Verizon and my current data plan.

What do I do? Just continue month to month until I upgrade my phones?

Probably if you are enjoying everything you want with your current plan. It doesn't hurt to go in and see what's available. I occasionally do that but will not change my plan until forced to. You can also purchase replacement phones from various sources. Problem is the amount you were paying toward the cost of the phone doesn't go away when the phone has been paid for. My rate hasn't changed for over 4 years.

That's what I'm doing. Then in the mail I got a post card that said upgrade at a discount or we will give you an additional monthly discount. I have 3 lines of which 2 are eligible to upgrade but I don't need to. They knocked $25 a month off of my bill. Not bad since I'm paying anyways. Told the wife to transfer that $25 a month into a savings account and we will use it to upgrade when we need to.

If it weren't for the migratory nature of RVing it would be simple. Just find a carrier that covers the area you live and profit! Unfortunately, Verizon has the best coverage so even though we could move to T-mobile or Sprint or even one of the big discount outfits, the first time we go out of the area our service becomes spotty at best.

You could switch your cell phones to one of the cheapies that ride on Verizon and then pony up for a data plan for the RV. But I don't know if that would save you anything.

Your dilemma is one I'll face in less than a year; I have a Note 3 now and actually like it better than the Note 4 so no point in upgrading the hardware and simply continuing to pay that bill every month is not very palatable.

Yep, I think I'll just sit tight.

I am in the same position. I've been out of contract with Verizon for close to a year. MY PROBLEM is that I have an iPhone 4s. The 4s models are not happy with IOS8, but to upgrade to an iPhone 6 will require a new 2-year contract + force me to buy the iPhone 6 at $700+ through their "unlimited service plan."

So, I have been thinking of going to another plan, like Straight Talk, which is month-to-month and has unlimited talking and texting, and 3gb of data/month for $45/month. My question: how reliable is Straight Talk compared to Verizon when traveling cross-country?

We took advantage of the Verizon offer to knock $25 a month off of the bill as I choose not to upgrade the Note-II. The Note-IV is a nice phone but not $300 worth.

We stick with Verizon for the nationwide coverage.

Sprint is currently offering a trade in and upgrade to service for other carriers.

The ad I saw during the Super Bowl last night from Sprint said they'd cut your bill from other carriers in half. It would be nice to save half of what I'm currently paying! Unfortunately, for the areas where we travel, Sprint has very poor service.

Stick with your plan & buy phones off Ebay when yours dies. NOTE!! Verizon WILL give you a discount every month if you go into a store with your DD214.

You can also do that online. It is a bit convoluted.... You go in through the employer discount program, give them your last military address and email a copy of the DD214. Takes about 10 days to show up.... <_<

I've been month to month for several years now. Still grafathered into unlimited data plan. No monthly discounts on our bill, as they are really trying t get me to abandon the current agreement. I was caught in a catch 22 for a few years, and could not add a hotspot to my account until about a year ago, whe they're software finally would allow it.

Have bought two phones from Craigslists in the last 4-5 years, looking for another now.

So yep, let it ride until you are ready. Also until we know how the FCC rulings will shake out, and if Congress will let that ruling stand, might as well not commit to a long term contract. Things could change ahead...

Unless you purchase devices subsidized (ie. discounted), most carriers no longer require 2-year contracts. You can bring your own device (purchase elsewhere, such as eBay, Swappa, etc), buy at full price or even finance devices separately from your service plans. Contracts are going the way of the dinosaur now - at least we consumers now have options to not have what are essentially loan payments bundled into our service price.

If you're still paying the same rate for your service as you were while in contract however, you may want to see what your options are for getting the $25/month per phone discount for no longer 'paying' on a subsidized price (assuming you have a More Everything share plan). It could save you some bucks while keeping your same service. Then you can consider in the future how you want to handle device upgrades.

In our experience Verizon has the best coverage across the country. Yours may vary. It is the best service for us so we pay the price.
