Now Hiring GasLine Survey Will Train

The Yuma Sun just had an ad running for Heath stating starting salary $12/hour; benefit package including 401k; $196 weekly per diem; .505 per survey mile using personal vehicle; paid travel time between locations. A good driving record is required and job requires travel throughout the West coast. Length of stay varies from several days to 8 months. The ad further states "Ideal for people with motorhomes!" so it sounds like they are actively seeking RVers. Heath is headquartered in Tucson and accepts a downloadable application via fax or mail, obtainable at: heathus.com

Not to step on anyone's toes here, but...

The OP's original intent was for this thread to be about Southern Cross so he could get referral credit.

Let's not hijack the thread and start posting information about how to get hired with another company.

Not to digress, but this thread has taken on a life of its own and contains a lot of valuable info and it would be a shame to deny folks that info. The OP has not been heard from for a substantial amount of time and is certainly due great credit for all the info he has provided, along with others, that make this a valuable thread for those interested in this subject. To answer the last post, there has been activity this time of each year and no reason to doubt it will be different this year. As you noticed neither of these companies respond to normal job aps, you need to follow thru aggressively. I applied and was interested but got tired of playing the phone game so dropped it.

I have hired on with Southern Cross as of April 13th. I m enroute to Norcross GA as I speak. Training begins April 21. I applied to both Southern Cross and Heath Ind. after Filling out apps and sending them in I contacted both company reps and followed up as instructed. Heath told me that for the first time in a long time, they had no openings for travelers. Southern Cross worked with my time frame and was straight forward during the whole process. if you're still interested contact Kelcy Faulk and tell her Barney Fife reccomended her. Barney

They don't give you much choice but you can ask for a list of places they have to go and try to pick one you like. Sometimes you get it, sometimes not.

Estimate, if you work 50 hours weeks, you would probably be able to clear $500 a week, maybe more depending on where you are assigned. If you go to CA, you will make more. But your gas expense would come out of that.

I don't know where the OP has gotten to. He seems to be MIA. I used to work for SCC.

Did someone say that they hire helpers also? If so,can you give more details about being a helper? I checked out the SCC site and didn`t see anything about being a helper. My legs will no longer handle all that walking part but if there was another job available I would be interested. Thank you.

Sorry Carl. They do not hire helpers.

What you may have seen was someone talking about transmission line work. In some cases they have paid a female spouse about minimum wage, to help "car ferry" their technician husband on long transmission line runs.

Hi All, sorry I don't check in here all that often. The work with Southern Cross has been going well. After my initial training they placed me in SE Georgia mid May. Nice quiet rural Georgia. Hotter than Hades tho. I figured we would be there through the summer as I had the whole district to do. Last week of June they called and said they had my next assignment. Great says I, should be done here in a couple o'months. No says they "you need to be in BALTIMORE by July 5!"

So we are now in the DC/Baltimore area. Its been interesting. We've enjoyed being here to see the the sites of DC and get paid for it. The Baltimore Gas Co people have been wonderful to work with. Southern Cross has really followed through with all they promised. All in all its working out OK. Its not retirement. It is a job. you will sweat. you will get tired. you will see and experience things not on the tourist maps. You will get paid to travel and live somewhere else.

it serves our purpose for now.

Well I applied to SCC and was hired on. They sent me to California for my training and assignment. They were working 4 10 hr days. When i started work fridays were then made mandatory and now saturdays are mandatory. 6 10 hr days is not what I was wanting. I thought we could go site seeing on the 3 day weekend but no so we were doing it only on a normal weekend plus after doing all that walking you are tired so you do need a day of rest but now with 6 days, sunday is going to be rest only no more site seeing.

The pay and per deim is good, however you have to ask yourself do you really want to work a 48 hr physical work week? You get about 2 hrs worth of drive time and paper work per day even though you are away from the house for 10.5 hrs. Could be worse I could be looknig for a job in the hvac field which is a little slow this time of year and due to the economy.

Doggirl, from what I hear, this end of the season push is normal. All the utility companys have to get their regulatory work done by the end of the year. Nov gets here and the panic begins, I'm doing 50 hr wks in Baltimore and buddies in GA were doing 6 day weeks for a while. this to will end. take the overtime while you can.

50 hr week is not to bad now but ours are 60 and sunday is volunteer. they did saturdays as volunteer at first then it went manditory. We are afraid sundays will become manitory too.

Are you contractually obligated to this company? In other words if you walk do you owe them anything? If you will not owe them anything then just walk otherwise just bank the OT and take next year off to do the sightseeing.

No, there is no contract with SCC. you are an employee only. The only thing you need to do is return the equipment that SCC supplies. The thing is, this is a temporary situation. All Gas utilities have work that must be done in a calender yr. as mandated by the US gov. Weather delays and extra work added by the local utility co have created a panic situation. Once 12/31 comes the push is over and its back to 40 hrs. Tough it out and take the money. its only a couple more weeks. You knew it was a job when you hired on.

This sounds very interesting. I'm retiring after 27 years as a senior measurement specialist with a natural gas pipeline company. May look into this, after (of course) I spend a few months doing absolutely nothing unless I want to.

They are in Norcross GA outside Atlanta. Here is link to website http://www.sparusholdings.com/56/Services.htm

If you apply you will need to follow up aggressively because they have a tendency to not be very responsive. But, a number of folks on this forum have worked with them and most seem satisfied. If you have not done so yet, I suggest you go all the way back thru this tread and read it. You will get a lot of info and a better feel for what you might be in for. I was interested, but decided not to pursue for unrelated reasons. Would not rule it out at some future point.
