Your suggestions for step by step for a fulltimer who wants a new Dish Network account

Recommended Posts

Every so often I'm asked about my Dish satellite setup. We've been Dish customers for years and when we went fulltime we simply moved the DVR to the RV and added a dish. Like most Dish Network satellite TV fulltimers I just update my service address when we relocate to a new area.

However, the people who ask about it aren't Dish customers. They have no account and no equipment. Some have tried to establish a new account only to get sent to Dish for My RV which is an add on service for people who have a home account and want a second receiver, etc. for their camper when they travel. Also, it's obvious that calling Dish is a shot in the dark. You may get someone who knows that they are talking about or you may get someone who is so stuck to their flipbook that if you ask any question that is new to them that they start spouting gibberish.

So...if your fulltiming neighbor asks you what they need to do to establish a brand new account with Dish what steps will you suggest they take?

It is a real problem for new RVers to learn about satellite TV. As sad as it is Dish and DirecTV are terrible places for information because their CSRs are tuned to dealing with residences.

Dish for My RV is a very narrow view of RVers, the weekenders.

So the best source for information for full-timers and part-timers is probably forums like Escapees. But you have to be careful. Too many pundits on the Forums tell you things that are no longer available but they have it because of grandfathering. Or solutions that support only one TV. Or only SD reception.

The best thing is to describe what you want from your TV service. How many TVs, HD programing, DVR capabilities. Then let people recommend what you can get.

# 1 Call Dish and when you get an answer ( keep a drink handy ) tell the person you are going to give an a$$ chewing and prefer to do it only once So you would like to talk to a supervisor !

# 2 Tell that supervisor you have called numerous times and gotten no results and all you have asked for is a Dish setup so DW can watch her Soaps.

# 3 Refill your drink and wait for the phone to ring cuz Dish wants a review of how things went with the last person you talked to and was the problem resolved.

#4 By now you should be anticipating Dish showing up tomorrow morning.

Dish workers do not like bad reviews, they dont go over well..... I know this method doesn't sound quite right but why mess with something that works :)

Forget about calling Dish. Find a local Dish provider who is familiar with (or willing to learn about) mobile installations.

We started out with a local installer in Hampton VA. I visited their office ahead of time and found the owner's father had an RV ...PERFECT!! When the tech came out he trained me in aiming the manual antenna on a tripod (we had a rooftop dish but it was obsolete out of the factory), and helped me get the wiring correct inside the RV. He did things I had been told were not possible.

I sell satellite systems for Camping World all day every day. I get this question at least 50 times a day. There are number of options that are available way too lengthy for me to try and address here. if you go the camping world route make sure you speak with the product specialist don't just ask at the cashiers register. DISH used to be my number one go to for satellite but unfortunately at the moment with all the different things they're doing dropping some of the satellite service in the eastern arc that could be iffy without using the larger antennas.

Thanks for joining in the discussion. Do you agree that contacting an installer rather than Dish or Directv is a good place to start?

First thing is to decide what kind of equipment you want, like DVR or not, automatic or manual dish. Then buy your equipment and learn how to set it up, it will still bring in the sats before it's authorized. Next decide on your package before you call. Call them and authorize the equipment on pay as you go, you can do that because you own the equipment. Setup paperless billing with the address you are at at the time. You can change your billng address online but your paperless so there's no point, you will be billed at the sales tax rate where your locals are coming from.

Setting up a dish takes a lot of practice but with the new apps on smart phones it's much easier than it used to be. I used to use a manual dish but now I'm lazy and use a automatic. We have been on satellite TV from back in the C Band 11ft dish days and we have always owned our own equipment because it's cheaper in the long run and you can drop it anytime you want.

I went with Dish because I got the Tailgater, receiver and fifty feet of cable for $199.

It was on special and it was shipped from a Dish dealer in Jacksonville, FL. I being

in Texas, didn't have to pay sales tax at 8.25%. It was easy to setup and use.

Dish is in HD and the DirecTV was not and at that time DirecTV was expensive for HD.

I have my service turned off and that costs $5 per month. When the service is on it is about $55

per month and they have not said anything about leaving it off for long periods of time. Good Luck

We just bought receiver and mobile dish and called to get service. How simple can that be? We currently use the Pathway 2 dish. It gives a stronger signal than the Tailgater. We actually get more stations with it compared to Tailgater. We are under no contract. Don't see any benefit in having one.

When we picked up our new trailer last October, we were lucky enough to get some good advice from some veteran full timers about competent Satellite Dish installation. They referred us to David Nannenga at Sats2Go, located in the Houston area. I know that not everyone can go there, but for those that can, he is the BEST. Internet reviews confirmed this. He specializes in RV Dish Installation, and he and his team can do everything for you, including account setup with Dish or Direct TV. He did the install at the RV Park where we were staying and had the complete job done in less than 2 hours. The job was neat, clean and done professionally. He was still following up two weeks later to be sure that everything was ok and that we were happy. I couldn't recommend anyone more highly.
