how troublesome is dpf on 2008 Volvo d13

I have a a 2009 D13 with dpf, as long as they were cleaned or changed out befor you buy one they should last forever with our use. I have no idea the shape of mine, I have not had any issues though. There is a 7th injector that could get plugged as well. A good fuel treatment on every fill up should keep it clean. The DPF cycles about every 2000 to 3000 miles on mine.

I have a 2008 780 with the 16 liter engine.

My only complaint is when it goes into "clean" mode, while I am stopped (like at a red light). The first time it did that to me, I thought I was on fire. Smoke was bellowing out from the bottom of the truck (I have a weed burner exhaust). I had a passenger in the truck and told him to get out. We were in heavy traffic. I popped open the hood and got out my fire extinguisher. Then it dawned on my. DAAHHH. It is in regen.

So, now if it goes into a regen, while I am stopped in traffic, I cancel the regen until we are on the highway.

Interesting. My Chevy did that early on. It had a loose clamp on exhaust. When 9th injector sprayed fuel it got on outside of exhaust. I abandoned truck also. Thought it was on fire

Thanks. I never thought of that. I just assumed it was normal.

I'll check for loose clamps tomorrow. I had the stacks converted to weed burners and the truck has been smoking, during parked regen, from the day I got it.

Also, I can smell exhaust fumes (very slight) when the engine is running and the truck is stationary (like at a stop light). I, again, assumed that it was because I had the weed burner. :(:(

Jim,

if your getting a hint or more of exhaust fumes Check the Flex pipe off the exhaust manifold of the D16.

they start getting cracks in the flex..

they are a PAIN to change as they are in a bad place under the cab/sleeper AND the clamps are NEVER oriented

the right way to get the socket and ratchet onto easily.

Lou:

Today, I installed the light kit (talked about elsewhere on the forum). I just took the Big Boy out for a night ride and, instantly noticed a difference. WOW!

After I finished the lights, I started to work on the fairings. The fairings have about 3/8" play in them. So, while I had the fairings off, I did a quick check on the exhaust system. From the staining on the exhaust pipes, it appears that I have leaks at every joint in the exhaust system. :( The connecting flange, exiting the DPF, is really stained. I will pull the flange off and check the gasket condition. The other connections, in the exhaust system, appear to be slip fits. Once I saw the extent of the staining, I just went back to working on the fairings.

Does anyone know of a high temp sealer that I can put on the "slip fit" connections? I may be able to break apart the slip fit connections and then reassemble them with the sealer. Or, is there some type of high temperature tape that I can wrap around the slip fit connections to seal them up?

BTW - I finished the driver side fairing and it now has zero play.

This is tangential to the topic, but its a relief anyway as we are talking about a DPF D-16..

I have to have an emissions test every two years on the 780 to keep it registered in Ontario.

Its just an opacity test. You are allowed 30 somethings, or maybe 31. We came in a 0.1 which was a considerable relief. The inside of the stacks are completely clean so I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised.

Anyone who is seeing bottom-of-the-door rust on their Volvo from this vintage should check their warranty documentation. Its a very common problem on northern trucks if you don't keep the drains perfectly clean.

I just got two brand new doors on my 2008 780 completely covered under the warranty. What a pleasant surprise, and the paint shop did a really nice color match.

On my 3rd freightliner cascadia D13 with DPF. (company trucks).

Have put 250-300 thousand on each truck.

Picking up my new Volvo Hopfully next week.

All 3 trucks have only done the soft regen while driving Never had to stop for hard regen.

My truck is ran heavy loaded 90'/. Of the time with about 4.5 hours of idle time (while unloading ) on a 450 mile 16 hour day.

Scared me at first because The DPF is made of ceramic and smells like a burning clutch while doing a soft region.

Maybe I need to install a DPF on the old Freightshaker.........that way maybe the "burning-clutch-smell" might be the regen of the DPF and NOT the burning clutch...........

Drive

Now that's funny

I will say this. My wife doesn't complain anymore that I smell like diesel fuel when I come home from work because it burns so clean.

But when I drive my peterbilt I keep thinking I have a fuel leak because I smell diesel fuel once again.
