Extreme Hopper Technology

Recommended Posts

I have 2 DISH Hopper DVRs in my RV and maintain a DISH technology web page (DISH TV for RVs), but I wondered how many of these DVRs could be networked together. Is there a limit? How many would DISH let you have?

I asked around on Satellite Guys, discovered that some of my prior ideas were wrong, but finally came up with an "ultimate" network.

Though pretty much impractical in an RV, I was told by a DISH rep that "Though we have a 16 receiver limit for a single account, we could let you have 7 Hoppers" (2 leased & 5 purchased).

I quickly ended that conversation as the DISH rep was drooling at the possibility of selling me those 5 Hoppers @ $349 a pop. BTW, the street price is a lot cheaper.

Anyway, I was really just interested in the network technology and the fact that a lot of Hoppers could be networked from a single Winegard Travler.

So here's Nerdtopia . . .

Hmm... interesting. I have the Hopper and one remote in the library (where the DW watches <shudder> Grey's Anatomy </shudder>. I like DIsh and we enjoy the tailgater in the RV but I do admit that most of what I want to watch I have to DVR because otherwise all I can find is crap.

So I dunno what I'll do when we start our 5-months-at-a-time snowbird routine. With any luck there will be palm trees growing up here and I won't have to move. :P

  • 4 weeks later...

interesting idea. iv'e seen 4 hoppers hooked up and you could access everyone of them from different rooms and on the menu it would say the name of the room that the hopper was located in when it pulled up what was recorded. but 8 hoppers connected what on earth would I do with 24 tuners :o:lol::P 8 is enough for me B) . I also think that you could say that it's very doubtful that dish would support this kind of configuration  !!

any particular reason you have two hoppers vs a super joey instead are there more advantages to having2 hoppers over the super joey

They'll support up to 7 Hoppers. That's what a DISH rep said. However, connecting Duo Nodes to each other to make one, grand network may not be supported. That's not to say it wouldn't actually work.

For a few dollars more each month . . . you get 6 tuners & a DVR instead of 5 tuners & no DVR. Also, if a Hopper quits in a SJ network you're SOL. If a Hopper quits in a 2-Hopper network, you've at least got the other Hopper.

Plus, a Super Joey is the Edsel of DISH equipment -- an SJ requires an Integrator + custom wiring + only 1 Hopper can be used.

What Dish doesn't "support", doesn't mean it won't "work". As you know, Dish does not "support" installing a Hopper in an RV. :D
