Looking for a Cool Arizona Campground for Summer

Show Low, AZ is great. We've spent time at the Encore RV park and like it but their are several others in the area. Pine Top, right next door is also nice and cool. Many people from Phoenix and Tucson spend the summer in the area.

Flagstaff and on the Rim (Payson, Show Low, Pinetop and Greer) are the coolest for summer. Flagstaff has slim pickings for RV parks and from driving by all of them, J&H is the best one but we've never stayed there. We stay either at Bonito national forest campground just outside the gate to Sunset Crater or at Pinegrove national forest campground at the south side of Lake Mary, south of Flagstaff. They are good if you want short-term (14 days).

There are forest campground all along the Rim drive (Hwy 260) from Payson eastward. Just north of Show Low is Juniper Ridge RV. It's a huge complex with many park models but has a section for just RVers and also owners rent their lots (which is better if you can get one). It's very clean, big lots, has a pool, spa, tennis, pickleball, golf, clubhouse and activities. However, true to it's name is has junipers and very few actual shade trees and it's a little lower in elevation than Show Low so it's warmer - although not hot like the deserts. In Show Low itself is Venture In which is popular and others along Hwy 260. Good luck!

Near or in Sierra Vista in the SE corner. High temp normally run about 95 cool nights.no big hills to climb or descend to get there. Huachica City has a neat little park called Mountain View.

We spent last summer volunteering for the Forest Service near Happy Jack, AZ. It is on Highway 87 about 25 miles north of Payson, and is about the same elevation as Flagstaff, 7,000 feet. It is much cooler than either Payson or Show Low. About a mile up Forest Road 3 from its intersection intersection with 87 is the Happy Jack Lodge and RV Resort. It is a very nice place and the weather is great.

We lived in Show Low before we went fulltime. It's a nice area, as are nearby Pinetop and Lakeside. My inlaws keep their 5th wheel at the HonDah RV park, it's a nice place.

Williams West of Flag. Several large parks plus it is at 6800' so while it may get warm during the day the temp plummets after sunset. There are many sites to see in the area from the forest to driving parts of old Rt 66. There is some fishing but it's not that great. The planes of fame second location is on 84 near the big ditch also. The big ditch is North on 84 and there are parks up that way also.

My parents lived here for 30 years and always had a place in Show Low or Pinetop. There's BLM land up there too. We plan on finding a place there when we can't drive anymore. We'll settle in PHX but summer in Show Lo...we have friends there now!

Lots of very nice camping in AZ in the summer, Flagstaff area is nice, we spent time up around Clint's Well for several summers. Just look at a map that gives elevation and head above 7,000 feet, you'll be cool and a happy camper.

Excellent tips, folks.

We camped at Show Low our 1st year and loved it, but looking for full hookup places.

Show Low, PineTop, Lakeside has many full hook up RV parks. As I mentioned, we really like th Encore park that is very near the state park. Nice people, activities, nice sites---

Just a quick question...if you're fulltime RVing, why are you in AZ in the summer? That's when most people travel to the "other" places you can't make it to in the winter! Just saying :)

Like much of the West, Arizona's climate is not uniform across the state. It has places that are cold in winter, but reasonable in summer, along with the places that are reasonable in winter, but hot in summer. Coming from Washington state I am used to this, the climate in Richland (where I lived for many years) is desert, but when people think of Washington they assume it is all like Seattle, mild, wet and green.

Not all fulltimers travel long distances, especially as they get older.
