It's 15 hours per person, so if you are solo you only volunteer 15 hours. They also have a commercial laundry at no charge for the volunteers. You are in a separate gated area and the sites are large with almost full length concrete patios, tables, BBq stands and full length cover. It's a great place to work and the supervisor is very good to work for.

It is still more hours than I would consider unless there were exceptional amenities. And it is way more than a workamper average hours.

And that is the reason that some folks just don't fit into the volunteer work-camper world. I would assume that this is a non-profit shooting club and not a business? To me that would make a difference and as I read the IRS regulations, it would matter to them as well.

Jack I agree it's more hours than usual. In our case it's only 15 minutes from our daughters so worth while for us. Now with that said if she wasn't close I'd balk at the hours. And it's not a bad gig.

15 hr for a solo sounds like a good deal to me.

I believe that number for a single has been changed. It is my understanding it is now 30 hours per site. Bobby is the contact at the range that handles hosts.

Kirk, I have worked far more hours than 15 at volunteer positions - such as at Arches, for example. There we were "on" for 3 or 4 days at a time. 24 hours a day. We "logged" hours from 7 am until 10 pm on those days. But this seems to me to be a real "work" job - with specific duties. Not just doing rounds and perhaps answering questions. It also does not seem to ME to be like a National Park job. I assume people pay to shoot at this facility. I guess I'd have to know more about the duties. Being a range safety officer for an 8 hour shift is real work - I can tell you. So is an 8 hour shift at maintenance.

Jack, that was the reason that I asked about profit or non-profit. For us that makes a big difference. It also depends upon what you enjoy doing as some may like the position while others may not. For us, we would probably need more information before choosing. Assuming that it is a non-profit, I do consider the 15 hours each to be below average but that don't necessarily mean that I would go there. I'd have to talk with them and know more about what we would be doing. We have had positions where we enjoyed our jub enough that it was not really work and we hated to leave. But there have been some that we just too much like having a job.

Like most things, we probably wouldn't all view it in the same way. I believe that the hours are reasonable, but the work might not be.

Clark County Shooting Complex is part of the Parks and Rec's division of Clark County. Their goal right now is for it to break even. It is tax supported.

As for the hours it's like any other place as long as they get enough people to work for 30 hours a week why should the reduce it. It's what the market will support. IMO

This is BS. We only did a month there because they lied about the accommodations. They are trying to get the entire complex run by volunteers and the lovely camping spots noted above were full so they put us and several other volunteers on the public camping area, fifty yards from the trap and skeet ranges. No picnic table, No BBQ stands, No concrete patio and No cover.

We were never asked what we were qualified for but were put on the rifle/pistol range as safety officers even though we are both clay shooters and knew next to nothing about pistols and rifles but were expected to be able to inspect each one many times a shift.

They took millions of dollars from the federal gov. to build a park that will never be able to sustain itself to make a state politician look good.

I will note that if you want a top notch shooting facility, and for 64 million dollars it should be, then this is the place. Archery, shotgun, pistol and rifle ranges are all pristine and I would go back to shoot but not to work.

It's not BS, its accurate.

It's unfortunate that you were not one of the 30 volunteers that got one the regular volunteer sites. They are as described. The public camping area is much as you described, but as least has a great view! It good for the park that they are getting so many volunteers, but not good for those that arrive later and have to stay up top.

It's not accurate if they did not do as promised!

Their website extols the quality of the accommodations and for many it is not so. For 30 hours a week of work we expected honesty in our dealings with them. If they only had room for 30 volunteers then that is what they should have told us. It was a long way for us to go for a lie. And a view of a city is not a great view unless you have a thing for lights.

That is good info to know.....I ALWAYS ask about the site and if we are guaranteed the site discussed, and if not, what are the other sites like. Something I also learned the hard way.

We worked there 3 years ago for 3 1/2 months. I don't think we ever worked 30 hours. Some weeks when we picked up brass on the pistol/rifle range we only worked abut 6 hours each. Work was easy, everyone friendly, but the wind was horrendous. The complex is located in the farthest northwest corner of the valley and the wind was relentless. That was the only drawback but would still work their again. We were told early in the application process that we would be in the over flow are which was 6 sites reserved in the public campground. Not the greatest sites but doable. We changed after a few weeks from cleaning the rifle range to working the newly opened sporting clay course. At first we were hosts until their own people we trained and the we just checked in and out the golf carts. Even cleaned them a little but most of our time was spent reading or just playing on our kindles. When in cleaning, the complex was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays so that was when mostly everyone worked. When we moved to sporting clays we worked Wednesdays and Sundays. The complex is in a nice residential area with lots of good shopping, restaurants, and casinos not far away. Downtown and the Strip were about 1/2 hour or so drive. They are very flexible if you need time off for anything. We took a week to go to Jojoba Hills. No questions asked, no problem.

We are currently in the middle of a 6 month commitment to CCSC. We had visited the facility before we applied so we had an idea of what we were getting into. During our application process we were told upfront that we may not get a host rv spot but might have to go into the public area. However as it turned out we did get one of the 'coveted' spots. We were also advised that our duties could not be ascertained until we arrived but depended on where they needed us, which sounded only fair. The options were maintenance, line officers on shotgun or rifle pistol, or archery. The hours were stated to be 30 hours for the spot, divided between the couple or one person do it all. They would always try to have the couple work together. (Same hours). It is my impression that the same person always handles the selection of the volunteers and since he was very straight forward in explaining everything to us I had thought it was the same way with every one. (However I did just talk to a new couple that arrived who said they thought it was a camp host position). The maintenance positions require some ability to move around (?) and the people that do the maintenance seem to think they have the best job. It is Monday and Tuesday and off Wed-Sun. The facility is closed Mon-Tues allowing for unimpeded maintenance. The line officer positions are usually two days a week or 3 days a week, 7.5 hours or 5 hours). The LOs at Rifle Pistol are busier than the ones at shotgun. But in no way is either position that taxing. They are very lenient about giving you time off for almost any reason but you have to be sure that you have notified them. It is actually a pleasant way to spend the 'cold' months and is especially nice because of having grandkids in town. Sure, the host spots are nicer than the public ones, but both have adequate room, good clean power and city water supply and sewer connections. The public ones are closer to the shotgun range but that makes it a very convenient 100 yard walk to 'work'. Not having a shade structure is not a concern in the winter (the summer would be a different story). We feel this is a good position and can't believe that it is almost half over!

Thank you for taking the time to give such a detailed explanation of the position. A couple of years ago, we met a couple who had been there several winters and had only good things to say about their experience.

It sounds like a nice place to spend some time if you get a host spot.

I'm a little concerned about being a range officer for 7.5 continuous hours. Having done that, I know that is pretty long for that position. And would tend to lend itself towards unsafe range conditions. But I guess I'm assuming they rotate range officers in and out during that time. Having someone responsible for a busy range for 7.5 hours is not a good idea in my experience. But given that I don't know the details that is one thing I would explore more.

I also assume they provide training - since each range is run differently.

we are there right now and are up on top.we were told that normally the first year people do not get the choice camp area but were told we would probably be there next year. the top camp area is not bad, lots of room but if you are looking for very few hours and I do not consider 15 hours per week in 3 days bad.it is 30 hours per site.as to where you are put to work, every person I know of got the requested area they just asked for it.we were never lied to and told straight up about what was going on.as to being 50 yards from the trap line I don't feel it is a problem it is a great way to meet new people and have a good time shooting or not.if you are a shooter it will be great and I do not work over 5 hours a day.if your are looking for a 5 star resort to work only a few hours a week then go somewhere else.IMHO

We used to spend a fair number of days at the shooting club on the east side of Spokane WA and we never had a noise problem on the days they were shooting, only shotguns there though.
