larryj41
Hi All, I have a Dish VIP211Z receiver and just added a 2TB hard drive to use as a dvr. I was shocked to find that if you are recording a program you can't watch another unless it is over the air. On my previous Dish receivers at home, I could record 2 or 3 programs at a time. Is there any way to be able to record a program on satellite and watch another on satellite? Thanks! Cyberdave
The 211's are single tuner. A dual tuner receiver like the 622 is needed to watch one and record another. Mark and Dale Bruss
You can record only the number of tuners you have. One for the VIP 211/411servies, two for the VIP 622/722, and three or more with the Hopper 2000. larryj41
Thanks for the replies. Does the 622 work in an rv? When I went to buy the receivers for the rv, the 211Z was the only receiver they mentioned. However, the multi-tuner receivers (622, 722, Hopper) require an open-faced dish (1000.2, 1000.4, etc) or a rooftop Winegard Travler. While some people get a multi-tuner to "work" with one of the automatic portables (Tailgater, Pathway X2, etc), they are at best a kludge. wa_desert_rat
We rarely watch live TV any more; practically everything is from the DVR now. When we're in the RV we're usually not much into TV and if we have good WiFi we can always just stream from our Hopper back in the SnB using "Dish Anywhere". So we've gone cheap and have the Tailgater and the 211; have not even put a HD on the 211 yet. But if we do put a HD on the 211 can we watch TV from the hard drive while simultaneously recording a program? We're still 18 months from winter snow-birding but get a lot of use out of our motor home during school breaks. Mark and Dale Bruss
Yes. The tuner decodes the satellite signal and puts in on the hard disk. Viewing the HD does not require a tuner. Dutch_12078
The viewing/recording modes for a VIP211+EHD (211z with OTA adapter) are: Watch and/or record one satellite program, record one OTA program. Watch and/or record one OTA program, record one satellite program. Watch a recorded program, record one satellite program and record one OTA program. I tried the second tuner / same sat game and after several aggravating tries... I gave up on it. When it does work you get ghosting and other problems even when not using the Port B connection. Mark and Dale Bruss
The reason is that with a VIP622, during Switch Check, both tuners fire satellite changes and the Carryout can't do them fast enough. You can wear out the Carryout mechanism doing that.
