Using a Hopper 3 with a Winegard Travler

Recommended Posts

I know it positioned with a Hopper 2 connected but does the difference in mode for the DPH and Hopper 3 still allow the Trav'ler to seek the satellites?

I did read the link. To a fine detail, Zulu did upgrade his Trav'ler to a DPH LNBF and did position the Trav'ler when it was running in Hopper 2 mode.

Running the Hopper 3 on the DPH LNBF is accepted.

What was not specifically stated was, did Zulu retract and position the Trav'ler when the DPH LNBF was in Hopper 3 mode. The difference is triple channel muxing versus 16 channel muxing and the need for the Winegard controller to detect the satellites.

He may have done that but it was not specifically stated,

Ok, I took his saying:

"Up until an satellite TV program appeared on my Hopper 3, I gave the Hopper 3-Winegard Travler combo a 50/50 chance of success."

"Actually, it took about as much time as a Hopper with Sling (or “Hopper 2”)."

as indicating that the Travler as fully functional with the Hopper 3.

It is a fine point and I am sure Zulu will clarify and the difference could mean whether I have a Trav'ler installed on the new motorhome or not.

Yep, we'll have to wait and get the definitive word from Zulu, but I doubt he would be claiming success with anything less than full functionality.

I went back and read closer. Step 2 does say "raise the Winegard Trav'ler".

Hooray! Well that adds about $1600 to the new motorhome.

He may have done that but it was not specifically stated,

No Zulu did not test this until this very morning . . . and got a nasty surprise! "No LNB Voltage" -- the Travler's Blue Screen of Death.

But there appears to be a simple workaround. Basically, just use an AB switch. BTW, a Winegard Travler will acquire sats all by itself -- you don't have to have a Hopper 3 (or any receiver) connected to it to work. My workaround depends on this.

Check my revised page -- on avoiding the Travler's Blue Screen of Death. Also took your PM suggestion. Danke!

Also, I tested the modified Travler's Manual Mode 61.5. This works too:

I was figuring something like that. If the DPH LNBF is in Hopper 2 mode (for lack of a better name), the Winegard controller could identify the satellites.

When the Hopper 3 is attached, I think the Hopper 3 sends a voltage signal to the Hybrid Solo Hub which sends the voltage signal to the DPH LNBF to switch modes.

Therefore, breaking the connection between the DPH LNBF and the Hybrid Solo Hub, drops the DPH LNBF back into the Hopper 2 mode and the Winegard Trav'ler is okay for seeking.

Since I would be using switches anyways for Trav'ler/Ground Dish switching, this is a simple easy to deal with solution.

Zulu you have done a great service for those of us Hopper users, thanks.

  • 2 weeks later...

First step done today with the Hopper 3 installed by converting my ground tripod DPP 1000.2 to DPH.

New remotes are a bit different. Paired the old remotes for quick reference.

Now to order the Trav'ler conversion parts.

Congrats! I still use the old remote. How long did the tech take to install?

BTW, I've found my H3 very susceptible to movement -- screen freezes, error message, then all is fine in a minute or so.
