How about something like a telescoping boat ladder?

Didn't Gregg make a slide out ladder for one of his truck beds? Small hinged access door, slide out steps, hinged hand rail/pole that snaps up into place.

Yes, he did. And it is very slick and does not take up too much room. It would not work in this application, though.

Something like Rick posted but why does it have to go "in"? Can't it just hinge and swing up and latch for driving or swing down for usage? Won't matter if it stuck up over that small deck since it could be dropped "down" to open the door.

Big5er...what program did you use?

I just used MS Paint. It makes drawing lines, circles and squares easy.

OK, those who can figure out next two (actually three) steps in the design "process" will earn 1,000 atta-boys and will be able to stand tall among all men and earthly creatures.

Steve, the spacing between the steps is 9 inches, little tall for a domestic standard, but less than step stools, which are typically 11 inches. Is this height in your "comfort level"?

Hard to describe, but to fold the steps flat so they slide into the compartment, why not use a design like the old crank out trailer windows. Use a cam on each end of each step that is attached to the step below. This would be operated by a cam on the side rails, so as the rails are lowered to the ground, the cam allows the steps to pivot to the usable position.

Venetian blind style... Make sense??

Jim, a hint, the whole thing has to be inside the drom behind those doors, which come flush with the 4 x 4 tube.
