Note that at this time, I do not have a Direct TV home account, using TWC for both Internet and Channel support. Mobile: - Allows DNS for East or West coast feeds - This allows the channels line up to remain constant, and DVR recordings to be stable(?) - On Edit: Assume that either feed will provide the major ABC/CBS/NBC/TNT/Etc. channels(?) "Home 2nd Bedroom DVR in RV" - Allows change of location address - This provides local area channel viewing - This could make DVR recordings to require regular intervention to ensure recordings(?) - Changes to recordings on the road, as well as location address, will impact home viewing(?) If I cancel the TWC Channel and go with a Home Direct TV and add the '2nd Bedroom" DVR to the coach, this would be the least expensive option. Direct TV Chanel Packages - The DW really enjoys her NFL games. So we'd need to choose an package that includes this NFL option. Other then that, it's just a matter of how much we want to spend for more channels(?) We currently stream quite a bit of the time, via Verizon phone HotSpot and Unlimited Data. So anticipate we'd go with the Mobile, use OTA for local channels, or do without if out of range. And choose a Direct TV channel package with minimal channels. which should lower the costs some(?). OK,would appreciate corrections and additions to what I think I understand from all of the surf-ucation I've been doing:)! Here is what we are doing now: -Having the new Winegard 8500 Auto OTA installed -Having the a new manual crank up Winegard Sensar IV installed (*) -Having the WineGard Trav'ler for Direct TV installed (Went with Winegard instead of RF Mogul at the recommendation of our RV Tech whom I trust.) -Opened a Direct TV Mobile account. Sending in the paper work for DNS. Will start with one Genie HR44, and feed other zones if needed with hardwire HDMI via IOGEAR HDMI splitter. (*) I wanted a raising mask antenna to add our WiFiRanger Bullet and their new RV usage surviving higher dBi antenna. All of my surfing indicated that the majority of the time the new Winegard 8500 Auto OTA will support us well. In fringe areas, the Sensar IV will provide us a bit more range for distant stations. I looked at a few used, actually free and abandoned, manual crank antennas. But figured for such a small investment cost, might as well retain the Sensar IV for the few times we might need it, and the DW will be happier with a new clean crank vs the banged up dirty units we'd seen available:)! (We'll just have to remember to use our old Bounder Raise The Antenna rule, of hanging the RV keys to the antenna crank when raised...) In addition to the satellite and antenna, we are finishing off the front cabinet make over and bumping from a 32" to 40" Samsung. I was at the right place at the right time for two items: 1) Costco had the marked down the last 40" Samsung they had in stock. November this TV was $1249, now regular priced at $879 in February. Marked down price $749. I know the staff pretty well at this Costco (Old Price Club #1 in San Diego), so asked the Manager if their was anymore he could do to help me on the fridge. He looked online, and marked it down another $150 for me. So $599 to me. (Can't remover which unit it is now, and it is in the RV up at the shop. Smart TV, with 240 refresh, but non 4000K, and non 3D (and on a 40" I would not want 3D anyways) 4000K content may come into vogue more in the future, but will Direct TV and Dish carry it or not - is the question. And frankly, my eyes are not what they used to be!!! I just wanted to have a fast enough refresh rate so sports would not give you the trailing arm pass of the QB! And 2) The RV shop, Temecula Valley RV, that I'm working with - had just torn down their display model for TV and satellite. They had a one generation old Yamaha Soundbar that had been in this display. Marked price was $849. Made an agreement to take it and have it built into the cabinet work for $449. I had been looking at the B&W Soundbar, for over $1200 - but no way we could figure out away to make it built in without it being too low. Considered just having brackets added, and disconnecting it when traveling, but figured that would be a PITA in the future. We're going to have the subwoofer mounted up against the wall behind drivers chair, and add a piece of dark glass to it, and the DW will have a 5" by 13" instant coffee table!! (The spec on this Yamaha are decent, and reviews have been positive with an average rating of 4.6.) I'm more into HiFi then Surround Sound, so stayed away from 5.1 on purpose. We're removing the Bose 3-2-1. Adding a Marantz NR1403 (Low power consumption, good ratings for HiFi, and 50W is plenty of power for these 40' sardine cans.) Adding some ceiling mounted tilting 8" Martin Logan EMR's. These besides having the built in tilt, will also have an angled wedged ceiling cabinet recessed into the ceiling which is 6" deep. These EMR's will be about 2" below the rest of he ceiling, and with the added angled wedge mount coupled with the ability to angle the woofer and tweeter within the EMR itself, we'll have these projecting well towards the rear of the coach. The EMR's are 92 DB efficient, with good frequency range and decent crossover components. They have a 6" version that would have probably served us well if adding a subwoofer, but for this HiFi 2 channel stereo application, I went with the 8" version to avoid having subwoofer. (Subwoofers amps can consume a bit of power. And 95% + of the time, the frequency range should support my listening music needs well.) Sorry for going on so much, but HiFi is one of my main hobbies, and while these are compromises from the Tubed components I had planned to install, they non the less will be a large improvement over the Bose 3-2-1 combo. If you only need your service address changed infrequently, it might work, but if you're a traveler, I wouldn't count on DirecTV changing your service address at frequent intervals. If it were me, I'd use the mobile account, get DNS set up, and use the batwing antenna if I were interested in watching local channels in my current location. SWharton Posted February 21, 2015 Report Share Posted February 21, 2015 We have Directv in both our SnB and RV. We have 2 receivers and just tell them which receiver we are using. Prior to going out in the RV we have DNS turned on for the RV receiver. The DNS channels are the majors: ABC, NBC, CBS and PBS. You can get the football package as a add on. To determine what pkg you want just write down the stations you look at most and pick the least expensive pkg that has those channels. If you only need your service address changed infrequently, it might work, but if you're a traveler, I wouldn't count on DirecTV changing your service address at frequent intervals. If it were me, I'd use the mobile account, get DNS set up, and use the batwing antenna if I were interested in watching local channels in my current location. My experience has been quite the opposite. When we got to Arizona last fall I called Directv and they changed our service address to the park we were in. Because the spotbeam for Phoenix locals is relatively large we were able to travel from Phoenix, to Tucson to Quartzsite using the Phoenix spotbeam. However, when we went to Borrego Springs, CA. we were out of the spotbeam, so I called Directv and they were more than happy to change my service address, even helping me find an address I could use, being that we were out in the desert boondocking. The CSA also, told me that as soon as we got back to Arizona to be sure and call again, so they could change our locals to the Phoenix locals once again. I think the "YMMV" is very relevant here since most people seem to have trouble with DirecTV changing their service address on a frequent basis. But, perhaps they've loosened up a bit about that since Dish doesn't have a problem with changing service addresses. If we were DirecTV customers, I'd use DNS *if* I could get New York stations (which I couldn't since our RV is registered in a Pacific Time Zone state). DNS has ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, PBS and CW only. NO TNT. TNT could be included with the package you sign up for. Package I have been grandfathered into(both E&W DNS) doesn't include Locals. I get a $3 credit for no locals. But they don't let you do that anymore. 1. Have DTV installed in the house with a Genie & one more HD receiver. 2. Put the Trav'ler SWM dish on the RV. 3. Sign up for DNS after you have a account and install is in the house. 4. When signing up for service don't even mention anything about having a RV. 5. When traveling in the RV just move both receivers to the RV.
