dsimpson
What is the best route from Salmon, Idaho to Rexburg, Idaho. I am towing a 37’ fifthwheel. One route is from Tendoy over Lemhi Pass to I-15 at Clark Canyon Reservoir. I am a Lewis & Clark fan and would like to visit this route but my topographical maps show some pretty steep grades west of Lemhi Pass and some tight switchbacks. Would you take a large fifthwheel over this route? If this route is not suitable, what about SR28 through Lemhi, Leadore, and then SR33 through Mud Lake over to I-15? 2gypsies
Here's some info on Lemhi Pass. It's a narrow one-lane in places gravel road. I don't think it's suitable with a RV. It's probably best to park the RV and drive the vehicle. http://www.blm.gov/style/medialib/blm/id/special_areas/byways___trails/lewis_and_clark_backcounty.Par.84759.File.dat/LCBackCountryByway_web.pdf Full-timed for 16 YearsTraveled 8 yr in a 2004 Newmar Dutch Star 40' Motorhome and 8 yr in a 33' Travel Supreme 5th Wheel
Chris-n-Dennis
Lemhi bad. I made the mistake of taking that one last year and I haven't run into a worse washboard, gravel, dusty road since (we seem to be still cleaning up the dust in the toad). Recommend 28 out of Salmon to 33 and it will take you straight into Rexburg and you don't even get on I-15. Alternative is 93 south along the river which means lots of curves then you still run into 33 and a straight shot to Rexburg. Must not have improved! We didn't go that way with the RV but we knew someone who did several years ago in a small motorhome. They told us that it took two weeks just for the dishes to stop rattling! LindaH
what about SR28 through Lemhi, Leadore, and then SR33 through Mud Lake over to I-15? We've driven this road and it would be fine for your rig. As others have stated, stay away from the other route with your RV! bobsallyh
We sometimes park at Clark Canyon Dam and have been over the road. OK, in our truck, but don't take your RV, Doug.
Al F
While I wouldn't recommend Lemhi Pass with your 5'er, you can go down to Leadore and take SR-29 NE from Leadore to Clark Canyon Reservoir. This route is almost all paved, as I remember, and no really steep grades. The hwy is regular width, but no paved shoulders. I do recommend taking a day trip over Lemhi Pass in your truck. Interesting to see exactly where L&C traveled over 200 years ago. dsimpson
Thanks for all the info. We decided to stay for a while in Salmon and make a day trip to Lemhi Pass. I'll take the RV over SR28 and SR33. My Rig
