Deer ran into the side of her car knocking off the passenger side mirror, shattering the glass in the passenger door and a rather large dent too. Apparently my son purchased a "donor car" for parts and the only things left are rear body panels. Living in the country in Iowa is nice except for the road hazards driving to town. Glare of emergency lights keeping flash on phone from working. Car front collasped. Body against tire. Winshield busted. It was a spike horn buck. Fairly large deer. Will get pic later today. Car did it's job. I was engulfed in airbags. I'm fine. At least it answers the question.. "how many deer does it take to get to the center of a smart?" Glad you're alright. That could've gone badly in a hurry. There are a lot of them for sale in CA now for $10,000 and I found a dealer in Sacramento thats selling them for $8500 and he has two left. If your interested I will send you the info of the dealer. I took a 200+lb buck thru the front of a mid-90's Mustang, broke the engine and tranny mounts and buckled the driveshaft. It was a very sudden stop. As the ER Doc said, "The seat belt broke your sternum, but it saved your life!" This is what the inside looked like after the accident Only damage to safety cell was that little crinkle in the A pillar. The driver's door still opened and closed as normal! Replaced it with a new 2013 that had been sitting on dealer lot for three years. Why did it sit for three years? Probably because that metallic yellow paint, Brabus wheels, and leather seats constituted a $5,000 "City Flame" package! Included in the price is painting some of the gauge bezels and other wrong color items. Upholstery can be replaced for about 2k as well. Including parts of the door panels. It's easy to completely change the color of these cars. No-one paints these things anymore. Vinyl wrap em. 3-4 days for wrap and 3 days for seat color and leather or bulletproof vinyl upgrade. The dude doing the hitch is of hunting somewhere and takes the car when he gets back last week of the month. Upholstery and wrapping underway at the moment, that and switching Sirus radio bases. The hitch or pull point is midway from top to bottom of the bumper. I was curious as to whether it was going to come out from under the muffler. There isn't a whole lot of clearance below and didn't want to reduce it. So wrapping of the bumper will wait until the bumper has been cut if it needs to be. Wrapping has to wrap around the inside of any cuts. If he can build a small hitch so the bike rack would slide in, that would be great. Then switch the bike rack for a "D" ring or pull point of some sort. Car footprint is different, deck tiedowns, chocks, ramp location and tire baskets will need modifying. Winch will now be more off center than it was before. I also asked him about producing them in a kit form, he was interested. Don't know about legal issues or warranty. Mine should be done before the trip south so Randy A and Charlie can have a looksee and pass judgement if I can meet up with them at the Tampa RV Show or in what's left of Melbourne......That is unless Randy sustains another injury. I'm fortunate here in Victoria to have one of Canada's leading Smart/Mercedes dealers. They got first choice on delivery and my ragtop was one. The 2017's were held up on the dock back east due to engine certification issues for over 3 months. Same engine as 2016 but different rules. As for loading a 2016 and up smart car, yes, ours has that capability by using a ball mount riser in the receiver hitch. The hitch: And on the car: I am currently using an 8" riser but will be building a 13" riser from 1 1/4" solid stock now that I am back from the rally.
