This is a Toterhome that a friend on mine built. What's so special it has an internal rollback in the rear. It's big enough to carry an SUV inside the truck. He did all the work himself. He designed the whole truck from the hyd level system , rollback, storage doors and hinges, everything was done by him other than bending the SS trim.

It's not mine so I wouldn't feel right taking photos of the inside. Its was sprayed with foam insulation after the skin was installed 2" thick.

 

He really is a good fabricator. The truck is set up with a wheel lift he hasn't finished. He worked a long time on the storage doors getting them the way he wanted. When you open them they are vertical beside the truck. He machined all the nylon guides and bronze hinge bushings for all of them. Laser cut the wheel openings.

 

His regrets should've started with a bigger truck. He is on the line with the weight on the rear axle if there is a suv in the back.

 

Would never do another without 450 hp.

 

He had a 3126 with a 7 speed now it has a 15 speed.

 

He has tried propane without much success but now has installed methanol injection on it for the big hills. (He gives it thumps up but it uses a LOT)

 

He has had two VERY odd problems on the 3126; the first being water in the oil a very slight amount after a while he tracked it down to a pin hole in a cylinder. He being himself carried his boring bar out to the truck sleeved it where it sat in the shed.

 

The second he started complaining of a pop on the exhaust ( said it sounded like a worn lobe on a chevy) the lift was good on the cam so he was at a loss for a while. He ended up pulling the cam out only to find one of the exhaust lobes was worn but only on the back side ( max lift was good) it had cut a groove in the lobe where the roller had cut into it. Shutting the valve to quick.

 

Mike has been racing for 30+ years in drag racing. Both of his 2 sons having been track champions several times in Jr's and now in street class. Now he just has the one girl left racing Jr's .

 

Back in the day when you couldn't just buy everything Mike bought a stick of 4340 1" X 4" x 240" and made a set of custom connecting rods. They are still in their spare race motor a 514 BBF. This was before he owned a CNC mill so he hand cranked them out over the course of a year.

This is a stand out truck, in many ways. Building a box on the back of a truck and making it look good is hard enough, but making it functional like that puts it on another level. Super nice build. I'll be snagging some of those photos for the "inspiration list". Thanks for sharing.

Mike has been racing for 30+ years in drag racing.

I'd like to point out that, as you admit, he's been a drag racer for 30+ years, hence a need for speed. 450HP ought to be plenty on any (non-overweight) single-axle unit for anyone else, unless there's some sort of MAJOR trailer hanging off the back. I used to drive an E-One 75' ladder truck that was about 46k (too heavy in my book for a single-axle truck, but apparently there are exemptions and look-aways for fire trucks). Cummins 450HP on a 5-speed Allison, and boy would that truck go. It could absolutely, positively smoke a much lighter pumper with a DD 350 in it. You know they admit the front axle is heavy when they "re-use" the power steering pump to operate the ladder...

As a drag racer, yes, I have seen a few toters like that. Some have a lift built in, some have ramps and other loading options. That is nice and well done. Great job by him and what a talent. Looks like the car in the truck and the Jr in the trailer pulled behind the toter. I can tell you that we had the most fun racing Juniors. Wish my son would have kept going, he was very good. He outgrew the car and decided to pursue his education instead. Glad he is doing that.

He said nothing less than 450 hp if he ever built another one. This one has a 3126 Cat 300hp

Friend of mine drags the Foxbody Mustangs with LS engines in them. Currently running one with a 60mm(inducer) turbo on it. Fast, fun and almost cheap.

 

Nothing cheap about going fast. This was our car right before I sold it. 6's in the 1/4 at over 205 mph. Yes it was t-top and they did still work. Four eyed Foxbodies rule.

People have asked how much I have spent on racing since I started years ago. Always tell them "I don't know and I don't want to know". John Force said in an interview once, "if you want to make a small fortune in racing, you have to start with a big one".

I said almost cheap..... :ph34r: If you thought car or truck racing is expensive, try offshore boat racing...... Nothing but $10's of thousands every weekend......

The trophies and plaques are cheap. Nothing like spending tens of thousands of dollars on a race car to win a $5 trophy.

 

Awwww Yes, spend a weeks wages for a trophy that cost less then lunch purchased from the vending machine. Then the sickness makes you go back to work on Monday so that next weekend you can do it all over again, then again, then again .....

Theres a difference? Or is it like fun and almost fun?
