Games Missing on Update Windows 10 Computer

Recommended Posts

In May, I updated an old Windows 7 computer to Windows 10 following the directions to a link given in an earlier discussion here.

The update went well and everything was working just fine, so in June I decided to update my Surface 3 Windows 8.1 computer (4 GB ram/128 GB memory) to Windows 10.

The update also went well, and everything seems to be working so far EXCEPT two of my games, Microsoft Solitaire Collection and Sudoku Free. When I click on the icon on the desktop or the tile, it flashes on the screen and then disappears. All other games are working OK (Microsoft Mahjong, Puzzle Star, Magic Jigsaw Puzzles, and Dominoes).

My first thought was that they had somehow gotten corrupted, so I right-clicked on the icon and clicked "uninstall." That didn't do anything, so I went to the "Uninstall a program" in the Control Panel. Neither game is listed there.

So I decided that I'd just reinstall a new app over the old one. Surprise...the Store app does the same thing: flashes briefly and then disappears! So I went to Microsoft's website, found the app, and clicked "install." Same thing happens: I click on "Get the App," it briefly flashes and disappears.

I Googled the problem and came up with a discussion of someone having the very same problem, but none of the solutions work for me (and, apparently, didn't work for the OP in that discussion, either).

Anyone have any ideas on how I can get these games working again? Short of reinstalling Windows 10, that is. I'm going to be installing Windows 10 on another older Windows 7 machine later in the week, and I don't have enough monthly data to do two updates in the same month. By the time my next billing period rolls around, the free Windows 10 update will be history.

In the history of windows, the initial inclusion of games, like Solitaire, were to provide a mechanism for new users to learn mouse usage. I would guess by now most people know how to use the mouse.

I use a few games and they are all available at the Microsoft Store and are, in most cases, free.

It is interesting how many complain about bloatware, but when Microsoft removes something, complaints again.

Mark, I've gone to the Microsoft Store and tried to get the app again for these games, but the same thing happens...it flashes and then disappears. I can't GET the app again on this computer!

And Microsoft didn't remove the game...it's still in their store AND it's STILL working on my other Windows 10 computer. It's just this computer that I'm having problems with. I'm complaining because the games AREN'T WORKING, not because Microsoft removed them!

In fact, I just finished going through all my tiles (by clicking on the Windows icon in the lower left-hand corner) and I've found it isn't just these two games that don't work...many, many of the tiles don't work. I get a flash and then they disappear. The vast majority of them I've never used, so it's no loss to me. But it's just curious WHY they're not working!

Are you saying you click the Free button and nothing happens?

Linda,

Download CCleaner and run the registry cleaner then CCleaner, and then reboot and try it again. If that doesn't do the trick download Revo uninstaller Pro for the free 30 day trial as long as you haven't on that computer before. Have it look for leftovers and orphan files. That tablet has the best Atom x7- 8700 SoC and 4 GB of RAM so no excuse.

I would also give Microsoft support a call as they are fielding Win 10 free upgrade questions free I believe.

There are reported errors with the Microsoft Store from corrupted caches from Win 7 like reported Games Missing.

Actually the embedded games went away with Win 8.

FWIW, I run W 8.1 and occasionally that same exact thing happens with a game tile. I click the tile, it opens for a second then disappears. I think Derek is right.

That's correct. I tried to download several game apps from the Microsoft Store just to see if I could get any of them to load and none of them did.

I've already done the CCleaner routine on this computer. I'll try the Revo uninstaller Pro once we get back home later this week and see if that works.

In the meantime, I've downloaded a Windows 7 game pack to my Windows 10 computer using these instructions:

http://winaero.com/blog/get-windows-7-games-for-windows-10/

They're working fine and actually have way more games than the Microsoft Solitaire Collection. It does not, however, have a sudoku game on it, so I'll be on the hunt for that.

I'll read your link in detail once we return home and see if anything in it helps to clear up the problem.

My Surface 3 computer came with Windows 8 when I bought it and it had the Microsoft Solitaire Collection on it.

I don't do games and did not notice any issues with programs not working after I upgraded. That's really strange. If you find a fix and what it was let us know.

My Toshiba laptop came with Win 8. The update to Win 10 hasn't changed my games. However, after one Win 10 update, the F keys for volume don't work any more.

Linda and Newt,

Microsoft is actually listening to us and if you give them the feedback they will look into issues. Read this webpage:

I'll look into it in more depth once we're back home.

As I mentioned above, I've found that it isn't just the games that aren't working...many of the other tiles/programs aren't working either. For example:

Calendar

Mail (the one that came with 10...I'm using another email client which works fine)

Photos

People

Phone Companion

Store

Maps (Google Maps works)

One Note

This is just a partial list of the tiles that don't work. I don't use the majority of them, so it's no big loss personally. However, I'd still like to solve the problem, if possible.

I just sent feedback to Microsoft at the link Derek gave, above. When I click on "send," the message popped up that they aren't able to reply personally, so I'm not sure how useful the feedback is going to be. I was hoping that someone would reply with a fix, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. :(

Linda,

Suddenly the problem goes away when they send out a corrective update. If enough folks write in that will surely happen.

If they know about them they will. But if only one person reports it they don't know it is a Windows issue. Lots of issues are user created and not OS caused. So when it is an OS issue the more who report it the more likely it will be patched.
