Upgraded old Dell from Win/7 Pro to Win /10 Pro. Don't Update!

Pieere

Yes!

On all my Dells windows 8 machines I had to download new drivers from the Dell website first before upgrading to Windows 10.. Pieere, you neglected to give the full model number for searching Dell customer support. But you can do that that yourself. Regardless of being in and out of warranty your Dell will have a Service tag number and an express service code. Write them both down and go here: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Products/?app=drivers

Now let's be clear. Was it already upgraded to Windows 10 and you just loaded a new version of 10 over an older version of 10, or did you upgrade to 10 just now and your first attempt to update failed?

Using your Dell model number do a search like this one and find how others fixed it or not. http://www.bing.com/search?q=Dell+upgraded+to+Windows+10+won't+do+updates+in+10%3F&src=IE-SearchBox&FORM=IESR02&pc=EUPP_

There are comment son folks who resolved an endless loop by downloading a program that prevemnted windows updates. Did you load that?

http://www.infoworld.com/article/3068612/microsoft-windows/good-news-regarding-win10-v-1511-cumulative-update-12-kb-3156421.html

Lastly. If you have been running fine a symptom of infections is that they will not let updates happen because of the Windows Malware detection run during updates.

So try to download this from a clean machine and run it on your system to be sure Norton Power Eraser: https://security.symantec.com/nbrt/npe.aspx

So what model?

Is this the first update attempt after upgrading? Or has it been running fine on your system for weeks or months before it balked at doing updates?

Do you have backups of all your data?

Have you ever checked with the Dell drivers for your machine page via the Service tag for newer drivers and firmware for it?

Try all that and let me know the above if you still can't get it to update. I would suspect a missed Bios update as a possibility.

With all due respect, for one of my Dell Inspirons, which happens to only be ~3 years old, the Dell site stated that there would be no Windows 10 support for this device. Irrespective of that, I did a clean installation of Windows 10 using only the drivers provided by Microsoft. The laptop is in use every day by my wife and it is exceptionally stable. The computer has a 4th gen Core i7 and 8 GB of RAM.

No offense taken Joel. But if he can't update from a fresh upgrade, as opposed to having the machine running on 10 for a few monthly update cycles fine and suddenly not updating it may not need a clean install. But some might. My goodness Joel I have a Compaq running a chipset with a Celeron and that can only use DDR2 RAM running 10 fine as an in place upgrade from Windows 7 as set up for sale with all the programs I load on my personal computers when I factory restore them to sell. That one needed to be upgraded to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, and an SSD before it became usable to me with Windows 7!

I waited until the drivers were available for both my Dell Venue 11 Pro and my 3 year old XPS One 2720. On the Tablet it only needed a firmware update to alleviate the initial video artifacts from upgrading to 8.1.

I have also found that it loaded on all my recent installs just fine, all regular upgrades leaving all my data intact, as MS seems to have all the drivers needed available for 99.9% of machines.

That was on 9 different machines 8 of which I still have and I hope to soon reduce to 4.

But the model number sure helps to find out if others had the issue on the same machine.

I used Dell Premium support to walk me through the drivers and which were needed. On the 2720 the Bluetooth drivers made things a bit weird until I upgraded them along with the firmware.

That was why I asked if his data was backed up. Once all the easier troubleshooting was done he could do a clean install or even revert if it was just done and within 30 days and start over.

Except Windows 10 Pro

Running my Dell Inspiron 17 (nee Win 7) with only the drivers included in Windows 10. Everything works. My previous Vostro 17 (nee Vista) ran Windows 8.1 with just Dell Drivers also.

You have to realize that special drivers from the vendor are only needed when they are not available from Microsoft. Every release, Microsoft does a scan of the driver world and includes new stuff.

That is one of the reasons for staying current in operating systems. As new technology is released, the new operating systems may already have support for the technology. This was a real issue back with Windows 95 which had the same accolades as Windows 7 today (I will stay with it forever). Unfortunately to get USB devices, it was a kludge until Vista. And all the peripherals had changed to USB.

What will be the next technology that Windows 7 won't support?

Mark,

Yeah I have to agree about 10 Pro being head and shoulders above the previous versions for usability. Cortana for in machine and on the web searches is terrific. I've also just given up and made Edge my default browser and let IE 11 take a backseat. I now realize it is much faster and just as easy to use. I also just upgraded my Windows phone from 8.1 "Denim," to Windows 10 Mobile yesterday. I'm almost 100% on it. Love the interface and familiar feel.

I could not see myself buying an iPhone after owning some nice Galaxy Tabs and Android Galaxy phones, then the concept of one OS to rule them all (Phones. tablets, laptops, desktops, Hybrids,) seemed almost too good to ever happen and it is now, finally.

Ignoring Dell, are there any devices with the Yellow! in the Device manager. If not, you don't need drivers from Dell.

Pieere,

There is no such service tag, nor is there any such service code. Doing a site search there is also no results for that model number. Sorry I can't help. If you aren't messing with me then I'd suggest you double check the numbers as the ones you posted can't get me specs, drivers page, nothing. Was it a refurbished unit refurbished by a third party? I pass. If it is working fine otherwise can you get it to factory restore 10? That might help if you have your data saved on an external drive.

Its GOB 1200! By product support website it states "not tested for Windows 10 Support; features, apps, and connected devices may not work!

However I am just going to use it as is! It states it is an XP, machine someone must have upgraded to Win/7. Then I upgrade to Win/10 on May 4th, then it updated on May 12 2016. It won't revert back to Win/7. Going to leave it alone! Thanks for the help All!

Hmmm....I just did a clean install on my old toshiba laptop. I decided however to stay with windows 7.....I have W10 on my newer laptop and I cant say that I like it any better than W7.

I kept the old laptop because it has a dsc drive..... A battery that no longer functions but a disc drive..

Laptop aftermarket batteries are only 20-30 bucks for a 12 cell replacement over the OEM six cells. Amazon and eBay best places. So me are not very good and others are. I've spent a lot of time reading feedback ratings and reviews and have bought five or six in the last few years myself and no duds. Like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Satellite-L755-S5244-L755-S5245-L755-S5246/dp/B00JBRUK1M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467269068&sr=8-1&keywords=toshiba+755+12+cell+battery

If anyone wants an external drive they are just 15 bucks new and shipped from Amazon for DVD/CD burners: https://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-Portable-External-Writer-function/dp/B00MAOIT98/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1467268708&sr=8-3&keywords=external+cddvd+drive

If you have any old laptops or laptop DVD drives laying around I bought one of these cables and it connects to any laptop drive and powers, reads anfd burns DVDs or CDs with it. $3.01 shipped here: https://www.amazon.com/13Pin-Slimline-Laptop-Optical-Adapter/dp/B00C574Q5G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467268871&sr=8-1&keywords=external+cable+for+laptop+optical+drive+drive

I still have the one I bought and use it to test drives I salvage from dead laptops.

  • 2 weeks later...

I finally wiped the Hard drive and reinstalled Win/10 from a USB stick. It has been doing the updates, but is very slow in doing the 10586 Upgrade! Has done most of the cumulative updates, Flash Player, and Defender! So giving the machine a clean install seemed to do the trick! :D:D Thanks everyone I tried every suggestion before I finally looked to the last resort! B)B)
