Well had the new company truck a couple weeks and I can't wait any longer to polish the tanks. 81ECEAEF-BE6D-47BF-8D34-CD70434C5524_zps

Here is what I started with.

58436FA1-4C7E-4610-B50B-A29A36CA029B_zps

Did a real good cleaning and taped off the labels that had to stay. 436F12C2-2541-4D5C-81A4-162D383C1072_zps

The tools of choice. Dewalt variable speed buffer the softest 7inch wheel I could find and a bar of green rouge. Also a wire brush AAA809D4-73C9-4D0F-AC4C-C372284F53B9_zps

And always a respirator and saftey glasses.

( that picture is a reflection off the tank)

Worked the buffer side to side top to bottom being carfull not to burn or cloud the tanks. If you look at the wheel it has some build up on it. Use a wire brush to keep it clean or it will scratch the tank.

Also don't set the buffer on the ground any dirt at all will scratch it also. A8C53C7E-3D4F-485E-8987-7A90CA7A05C2_zps3AF7C741-8484-4249-813D-72AC90A5EB72_zps

And the end result.

Any touch up can be done with zephers pro 40

Polish. And any black residue cleans up with corn starch on a soft cloth.

A friend of mine just bought a multi-thousand $ machine to polish wheels on or off the truck. I'll get to see it this weekend & get some pics. It's mobile & his son will be operating it as a business here in MD.

OHHHH, My eyes !!! I don't think I have ever seen aluminum shine like that. Talk about a mirror finish...... About how long did it take to attain that perfection ? Beautiful job !!!! Charlie

Thank you for the kind words :)

There are different levels of polishing that one is about midway. Each tank took about 2 hours.

I did it after work on my first day of a two week vacation knowing someone else would drive the truck for the next two weeks while I was off and most likely not take as good care of them as I would like. I'll touch them up some more when I get back to work along with the deck plates load bars and load bar rack.

I'm participating in a company truck driver rodeo the weekend after I get back. And wanted the truck cleaned up for it. That's why I did it before going on vacation

Oh I'll teach you no problem. But it will be from a chair with a couple Coors lights or a Dr Pepper float. Blue bunny ice cream of course :)

Ron, I think your friend needs to haul his machine to the Rally! Probably a little business to be had there.

For those interested Worldwide Equipment (Volvo Dealer) in Knoxville does have a wheel polishing machine at their body shop. Price is $60-70 per wheel depending if it has to be removed from truck according to the parts guy. He wasn't sure about the price though.

If your wheels are in good shape. No big dings it's very easy to do. Come on guys take some pride it's addicting.

1)get a cheap $99 7inch drill master sander polisher from Harbor freight.

2) 7 inch medium and 7inch super soft buffing wheel

3) one bar of green rouge.

4)one all thread coupler to make extension for the arbor on the sander along with a longer bolt and two large washers to attach buffing pad

5)cheap wire brush for cleaning or dressing the buffing wheel.

Clean your wheels thoroughly with soap and water or 50% deluded acid wash works the best. Don't let the acid wash stay on the wheel longer than about a minute rinse thoroughly.

Apply green rouge to the buffing wheel and buff your wheels working around the wheel.

If Your wheels are in good shape soft wheel is all you will need. If They're real bad use the medium wheel first working to the soft wheel.

Any black residue cleans up really easy with an old sock turned inside out and cornstarch.

Should take about 15-25 minutes per wheel

It will cost you about $175 for everything you will need to do it.

You Can use the buffer and all the products you just purchased for any other aluminum or stainless on the truck. Once you get started it is an addition.

Just please make sure you use safety glasses dusk mask or respirator it is a very dirty process.

All detailing products can be purchased from any good car or truck detail shop our online from the same.

Many truck dealerships also carry what you need at a little higher price.

Zephyr PRO 40 is also a great polish for Aluminum and stainless.

AND VERY IMPORTANT

You guys with newer trucks check for a sticker on your wheel. The blue Alcolo sticker you're good to go. But if you have the black sticker that says Dura bright. Do you not use anything but soap and water and maybe some pro 40 for the polish. Those are a sealed wheel and you cannot buff them or acid wash them ever. If you go to blue beacon or any place like that do not let them use any chemicals on your wheels.

Broncohauler,

Looks great -

I recently polished my 6 outside wheels with "Mothers" polish and a Maguiers foam polishing cone. They were in pretty good shape so only 30 min per wheel and about $30 in parts-N-polish.

The polishing cone is "light duty" compared to your hardware but works well. It's a shaft with a fixed handle/sleeve and a big foam cone...very simple, cheap and effective for light duty polishing with a drill. It's worth looking at if the job isn't too raw.

I was pleasantly surprised or reminded how easy it was and how good a fresh polish looks. Getting lost in the task and the shine good therapy...

I have a power ball it's ok but tares easy.

I'll have to check out the maquiers cone I love their products but have not seen that.

Mothers makes a great Polish for something in good condition but a little pricey for me.

Look on line for Zephyrs Pro 40 it cost about

$13 for a 20oz bottle. I love it because it has just a small amount of abrasive to clean oxidation but won't scratch your tank or wheels. also has a small amount of wax in it.

A lot of the truck shops and auto detail stores sell cones made of cloth that you can put on a cordless drill and they work real well in the holes on your wheels or around Lugnuts.

Believe it or not the super soft 7 inch buffing wheel fits in between the Lugnuts real nice you do not need to take your wheels off.

Glad to see more people are polishing up their trucks take some pride it's worth it. And it makes campgrounds a little more forgiving about letting us in with the bigrigd when there clean.

Charlie
