2017 Solar Eclipse. Who's watching and where?

We can't seem to get a reservation anywhere along the path of the eclipse next August. Who is going to watch it and where are you going to be? If the park your staying at still has spaces available, we'll join you and make this an (quasi) impromptu HDT meetup!

We are willing to drive anywhere in western US, but was hoping for somewhere in the Eastern Oregon to Yellowstone totality path.

Not west but Crossville, TN is in the path and a lot of us know where that is.

Guess we will just sit on the front porch and watch since we are right in the path.

Why do you need a RV Park to stay at? Your RV should be self contained. There are probably at least a 100 boondocking spots to stay at starting at the eastern edge of the Cascade mountains in Oregon (i.e. Bend, OR) and along the path of the eclipse across Oregon, Idaho and Wyoming. Just find a spot, arrive a week or so before the eclipse to get set up in the prefect spot. To help you determine if you will fit into or access a spot, use Google Earth or Google Maps or other similar tool to give you a aerial view and sometimes a ground level view of the potential boondocking spot.

The Escapees RV Club has a listing of lots of low cost or free camping or boondocking spots at http://daysenddirectory.com/ You do have to be a member to get the listing for the nominal sum of $15.

There are several other websites you can find by googling "freecampgounds" or a similar search.

So Carl, how many smarts will fit in your driveway?

Probably 20 if you have good brakes and wheel chocks. It is serpentine and at least 10% grade. Have possible plans for Little League World Series so may miss out on eclipse when series announces the dates.

I'm just north of the total eclipse line so will be driving south to see it...if I'm not hiking the Colorado Trail still. If I am still hiking, I have plenty of parking (plus electric and sewer dump) and will likely be looking for a pet sitter for a couple of weeks around that time.

Wow, The eclipse shadow will score a direct hit on our fair town of Greenville,SC. Maybe we will rent out our home to some of the throngs who come from foreign shores to see this spectacle ?? 4 empty bedrooms while we stay in the camper....maybe we can make enough $ to allow us to stay a little extra time in Florida in the winter. The eclipse should be interesting to experience, anyway. Charlie

Ambassador RV Resort, home of the west coast rally, just opened up their reservations for 2017. It will be a great base to watch the eclipse from, right on the edge of the path of totality. We will be there for two weeks if anyone wants to join us for a mini-HDT meetup :-)

This is more of a possibility as I told the outfit I'm currently with there was a 2 week period in August I wanted to have off to catch the Abbotsford Airshow and the NW Washington Fair in Lynden. I'll check the dates, if they are all in the same timeframe, I'd go for the eclipse.

We haven't made a final decision yet, but we'll probably be in eastern Oregon since it's the closest place to where we live. We don't plan on being in an RV park...there are several places to boondock in the general area we have in mind. We may also decide on one of several places in Idaho.

I was in Hawaii for the Total Eclipse in 1991 I think. It is quite a strange sensation. I had completed a 12 hour night shift and the eclipse was around 8 to 9 am if I remember correctly. Had the funny glasses to prevent blindness. Not sure where I will be, but will get as close as possible to the path and hope there is a clear sky for the best show.

FLASH!!!!!

REDMOND, OREGON------- 09:48 Local

100% overcast...........

Put away your eclipse-googles........

Yes folks the legend that Eastern Oregon has Clear Skies all summer is............BS ............(Black Skies....)

Clouds happen here even in paradise...........

Over +40 years of piloting and over 10,000 landings in central Oregon I will confirm that I have had to descend through plenty of clouds in August in Central Oregon.........

Now Disclaimer:  Overcast like we have right now often burns off later in the day ........However the real cloud cover often in August in Central Oregon centers around Thunderstorms and I have often seen +90% sky coverage in huge storm cells......

Welcome to paradise with a view...........or maybe not a view........or heavy hail.......or..........

Drive on............(bring your eclipse googles........and a hard-hat.......)

We will be watching in Central, SC at my daughter's house.  16 acres, I am sure we can find a place for more viewers if anyone is interested.  We will not be taking the Volvo.  We have a bumper pull trailer parked there as a spare bedroom.

Steve, you could set your 747 down on the grass at Tripletree. You do have spoilers, air brakes, reverse thrusters and good brakes don't you ??  We would love to see you if you can make it down here.  I think you would fall in love with the place. We plan on having a good time.                                                                              Charlie

Dolly, drive or fly into Tripletreeaerodrome.com.  We are having an eclipse party there. 7000 ft x 400 ft grass runway.  Look us up.     Charlie

Charlie,

Wow.....went to the Trippleee website and that place looks like a real party hearty spot......

You know many pilots just get to be better airplane jocky'$ as they get older but a few like me need 7'000 foot WIDE runways to operate from as we "mature"...... Maybe better to herd the old floatplane in and just do a waterloop ......

Our place on the beach at Waldport has 1,900 x 60 turf with trees all around so you have to limit your nose picking time during takeoffs and landings......now our herd of 14 elk do help to mow the strip so it's best not bump into them...... Seems like your 7,000 foot strip might need about 50 elk to keep it mowed.......

As far as the Eclipse is concerned our dog-patch place in bend is just on the edge of the eclipse so I suppose that will be close enough for us geezers in Central Oregon......

I did practice my eclipse viewing the other day by goobering a few welds under the buddies old Mack hay truck.....most of my welds seem to involve some eclipse-like-views.......

Maybe later I might relate the adventures of "operating" the old c-206 float plane out of a treed-over-river in South America......almost funny unless you were in the plane.......

Enjoy the party and try to not run too far off that short strip.....

Drive on......( Don't bump into the elk on the runway....)
