Air ride hitch vs Air ride pin box

I have a 96 Freightliner FLD. I have a good B&W 20k companion hitch on the bed. Been reading about damage to the camper frame and an air hitch will resolve the problem. I am looking at an air ride hitch pin (used) that will fit my trailer. Question is, Is a hitch pin as good as an air hitch for an 18k trailer? What should I look for?

IMHO, it is not as good. My air hitch (Air Safe) has both up & down like the pin box. BUT- the twisting force that can be present when negotiating uneven terrain makes a tilting hitch much better. Maybe there's a tilting pin box out there, but I've never heard of one. Your FLD frame isn't going to give AT ALL if the trailer twists, like going out of a fuel stop w/ high curb. A dually pickup isn't as meaty & will absorb that. Next weakest link is.........

I ran a B&W companion with a TrailAir hitch for a while and it is a good combo. The B&W DOES have a tilting hitch so no problem there. My current setup is a TrailerSaver with a MORryde hitch instead of the old combo because the Companion wasn't rated for our current fiver.I would take the TrailAir pin with that B&W any day of the week over a solid setup on a MDT or a HDT as long as the weight limits will work with your fiver.

The B&W 20K will give the lateral action that an air pin won't supply.

But one more consideration, any air pin extends the leverage of the pin box on the frame.

All air pin boxes I know of extend out form the pin box mount. If your unit has a straight down box I would be concerned about overloading it with the air pin. My Teton has a straight down box and that was my reason for an air hitch. I would call the manufacturer and ask before I l put an air pin on. I didn't have that option.

Just get a written statement from your fiver manufacturer that the air pinbox will be covered by your warranty so if there are issues from the extended length you don't end up paying for the repairs.
