chiefneon
Howdy! We have owned a Smart Car for several years now, first a 2012 and recently purchased a new 2016 Smart Prime. I can't began to count how many folks have asked us if it is electric. We have even come our to get into the Smart to find people looking for where to plug it in to charge it. I usually just tell them "It doesn't take much gas and I don't fill it very often". Yesterday I pulled in the a service station to fill the Smart car and as I was walking around to the pump a man standing there asked "that thing takes gas, I though it was electric". I looked at him and said, "no, I have a large key in the back here that I wind it up with"! He looked at me and said "oh". "Here's your sign"! GlennWest
Yes, I get a lot of ribbing form my fellow construction workers. It is all fun though. When it gets too much I just drive the Freight Shaker to work. They shut up. 2003 Teton Grand Freedom towed with 2006 Freightliner Century 120 across the beautiful USA welding pipe.https://photos.app.goo.gl/O32ZjgzSzgK7LAyt1

GeorgiaHybrid
Jack, we are currently having our bed built and I am torn with using a straight pull on the side which will work but the winch will be offset to one side and will not be able to be used on a 2015 or older Smart. I will make the decision Monday after talking to Curt about the possibility of a hitch to center pull with or just go ahead and set it up for 2016 or newer Smarts only. 2017 Kenworth T6802015 DRV 38RSSA Elite Suites2016 Smart Prime
GlennWest
Why could you not single pull an older Smart?. If new works, older should too. 2003 Teton Grand Freedom towed with 2006 Freightliner Century 120 across the beautiful USA welding pipe.https://photos.app.goo.gl/O32ZjgzSzgK7LAyt1
GeorgiaHybrid
Glen, some people seem to think that one tow hook location point is not sufficient and it will hurt the car. I don't have a problem as long as the pull is parallel to the car and in line with the tow hook (no sideways pulling).. My only issue would be if I ever have the need to load a 2015 or older car for someone, they might not like a single pull point and would prefer a center pull. In my case that creates a slight issue with where my APU is located. More than likely, I will go with a single, offset tow hook location and let it rip. We are not putting a huge load on the panels winching a Smart up our ramps. 2017 Kenworth T6802015 DRV 38RSSA Elite Suites2016 Smart Prime
GlennWest
I know my Smart goes up, I currently drive it on, effortlessly. Can't see a single point being a problem. I am fairly sure when I go that route it will be a single pull. I never get the placement the same driving it on. The difference in the width of front and rear messes me up. 2003 Teton Grand Freedom towed with 2006 Freightliner Century 120 across the beautiful USA welding pipe.https://photos.app.goo.gl/O32ZjgzSzgK7LAyt1
DavidMc
Tow trucks use a "snatch pulley" (I think that is the term) to change the angle/direction-of-pull. That pulley connects to the tow-truck in various places to allow redirecting the tow cable (long sand line) over the side or offset from the normal center-of-tow-truck location. So, along those lines, perhaps your initial winch location can serve for you new vehicle (without extra pulley), and then the cable is redirected "sideways" to pull at the center of the other vehicles. GlennWest
Good idea. Leave winch where it is. I would just add two pulleys to offset. 2003 Teton Grand Freedom towed with 2006 Freightliner Century 120 across the beautiful USA welding pipe.https://photos.app.goo.gl/O32ZjgzSzgK7LAyt1
GeorgiaHybrid
Luckily enough, our Smart has the same width across the tires front and rear (64") but that might be due to the sports suspension and 16" wheels. Ours is running two different widths of tires though, 185/50 R16's in the front and 205/45 R16's in the rear. A LOT of rubber on the road for such a little car. One other thing I like is the 4 lug nuts instead of 3 on each wheel. I think I will just go ahead and run a single pull on the bed and be done with it. 2017 Kenworth T6802015 DRV 38RSSA Elite Suites2016 Smart Prime
