Where to Store It?

A couple we met and have been wintering with are from England and been here a year and have to go back for about 4-6 months. They were talking about storing their 5th wheel and truck.

The 5th wheel is not something they mind giving up so I told them I would take it to PPL or the likes and put it up on consignment while they are gone. If it doesn't sell by the time they come back...they can take it back but if it sold they could buy a new one.

They do want to keep the truck but the question is...where is best to store it? I know there are others from England, Australia, Canada, etc on here that have done this so I am hoping that someone learned from them or they themselves might be willing to answer this question for me (for them).

Being military, we commonly store our items for 6-12 month windows. I think your idea for the 5th wheel is good and if unsold, it simply serves as storage. As for storing the truck, an easy recommendation would simply be a storage unit similar to what UHAUL offers. I am sure you have several local storage units that have enclosed units large enough for the truck. Ensure they have good insurance on both as Mother Nature and Murphys Law are always present. Most insurance companies offer storage-only insurance for vehicles that are guaranteed not to be driven for specific periods. Good luck!

Thanks Grawe

Is it ok to sit for 6 months and not be started? I believe it is Diesel but thought any vehicle needs to be started every 2-4 months??

Depending on climate, 6 month will not be a huge problem. It would be beneficial if someone could start it and let it run for 20 mins (until reaching operating temperature) every month or two. However if not possible, ensure the tires are properly inflated, fluids are full to avoid condensation, antifreeze is appropraite, disconnect the batteries and expect to change the fuel filter upon return. Other quirks are possible but for only 6 months, you should be ok.

It's OK to leave a motor alone for 6 months or longer without starting it. The most wear a motor sees is during the first 3-4 seconds a cold motor is started, as all the oil has drained into the oil pan and the motor top end is mostly dry. You can verify this by watching the oil gage during a cold start and the pressure will read 0 psi for the first 3-4 seconds. I once read a study where a cold engine start is equivalent to the engine wear of 100 miles driving. I would disconnect the batteries and attach a trickle charger. For diesel fuel it depends, if it's a dry climate than leave the tank empty and get fresh fuel when you get back, if humid climate, then fill the tank to reduce moisture buildup and add a stabilizer like Sea-foam. Either way, plan to change the fuel filters after running the first full tank when you get back. Also, change the engine oil before storage so the dirt doesn't settle out and form sludge or turn acid. Tires on wood boards. Almost forgot, put a couple of Decon packets under the hood incase the mice decide to visit, it's cheaper for you if they munch on the bait instead of the wires. Another suggestion if stored outside is to use some window shades for the windshield and door windows to reduce inside cab heat buildup along with a anti-theft steering wheel lock (The Club).

We are from Australia and store our pickup in a UHaul facility. We have left it for up to 8 months without an issue. Great security. My only concern has been the foot prints on the engine!!! The problem is the storage bay sizes. You will be struggling to find a full enclosed one that will fit a full sized pickup. Ours is under cover along with some RVs.

We are about to pull it out of storage after a 8 month absence. My guess is that this time we may be paying for a new battery.
