Hi Lisa,

I have a replica of an 1858 Remington New Army Service made by Pietta - see

http://www.taylorsfirearms.com/pietta-1860-army-revolver-1861-navy-revolver-parts.html

for the design.

See:

Instead of having cartridges (some refer to as bullets), it is hand-loaded by measuring the powder and dropping it into the cylinder, followed by a felt wad, which is tamped down, followed by a lead ball, which is also tamped down. Then the primers, which are caps that fit over a steel nipple are pushed on and the entire cylinder is put back into the frame - - then it is ready to fire. It can take 15 minutes just to load the 6 rounds.
