campground or visitor center for solo

I have been volunteering winters only as a solo for the last 4 years. I am going to start looking for paying jobs at campgrounds and national parks (prefer not to do campground host so that leaves out a quite a few). It seems that summer would be my best options for paid employment in parks or KOA. I am not really into the RV resorts but will try those at some point and may do Amazon next Christmas.

I am finding it hard to find solo opportunities at KOA in particular as well as others. I did work end of season for a couple of months at Yellowstone this fall and will apply to those type of positions this summer. I have a number of applications out there and am just waiting for some to post their summer positions in the parks.

It feels like a chaotic approach to keep applying everywhere that comes up and waiting for one that when you call to pin them down because you have not heard back, they tell you that they will choose couples first. I appreciate those that advertise couple preferred if this is their policy. I have tried to find Jan-March or April paid positions but am looking in the west coast where many places are not open in the winter just to save on travel costs this year I have a volunteer position that I committed to awhile back for Nov and Dec in north coast of CA.

I do have a cat so that keeps me out of paid housing for those spots you can use your RV in the winter.

Does anyone have a suggestion on a more organized approach especially for a solo.

Hi Teri - Kevin from Yellowstone here. Glad Robin and I were able to meet you at Canyon. - You already have DNC experience and connections. Are you interested in the Grand Canyon? DNC has that contract now and they hire a lot of solos.

BTW - for those interested, DNC is Delaware North Corporation. They are the concessionaire for the Yellowstone General Stores.

The richest are not those who have the most, but those who need the least.

Greeetings again. I am currently volunteering in the Redwoods.

I was looking for something this winter where I could still live in my RV.

I do have an interview at Grand Teton and would like to spend some time in the future at the north rim of Grand Canyon but prefer campgrounds, reservations or visitor info, travel planning at this point. I may try Amazon in TX for next winter.

Still have Yellowstone (was with Xanterra) as an option but looking to compare campground costs.

If you want a volunteer position, there are several good sources. For the NPS I always start with the NPS VIP pages. Locate the park that you consider to be your first choice and contact them via email. Often we have been able to find a position before it is even advertised on vol.gov. But do not overlook the Vol.Gov pages as they list most federal agencies and you can search by location. Do not be afraid to contact a park directly as I have found that to be one of the best ways to find positions in specific areas.

For sure there you are learning and unless you are a lot sharper than me, you will never stop discovering new things to learn. We have done a lot of volunteer positions and have learned that we have only scratched the surface. To me, learning new things is much of the attraction. You will find that your attitude will be one of your greatest abilities.

The opportunity to learn and improve our skills each day is one of the great things about our GREAT country. Attitude permits many things to take place. With new skills comes new opportunity. Sometimes I just do a lot of looking, research and reading to figure out a problem. After a problem is solved or a solution found it can sometimes be applied to different situations. A skilled volunteer is often attractive to a coordinator.

I have found that my volunteering keeps me excited about life and helping others. Retiring to just sit does not get it for many folks! As you get better at what you do and learn, perhaps a new job could be in the future? Who knows!
