Repair or Replace aging RV?

Recommended Posts

We no longer travel in the east so I was Googling RV Remodel in the Northwest and found another SKP thread with some referrals:

http://www.rvnetwork.com/index.php?showtopic=112375&hl=truline#entry713815

In the above thread Tucson was mentioned but no names.

Spokane, WA http://trulinecustomrv.com/

Junction City, OR http://www.amazingcreationsrv.com/

Woodland, WA http://daveandljs.com/

We previously had some work done while wintering in Arizona: updated a window seat that replaced the sofa, a dishwasher installed to replace the gas oven and a convection/microwave oven to replace the OEM microwave but he was injured in an accident and is no longer doing remodels.

Would love to find someone in Phoenix/Mesa area to have the work done in the winter when we are parked.

We are new to the RV world, so take this advice in that light.

I looked at about 10 promising Tetons in the year before we bought our 2005 Travel Supreme a year ago. 7 or 8 of those Tetons had varying degrees of water damage. I talked to Howard at Fork's RV about cost of repairs to one exceptionally nice looking Teton I was considering and he said to replace the spongy rotted floors in the large kitchen/entertainment slide and bedroom slide would cost $10K and $5K respectively. He also cautioned that once they get started on the repairs they often find additional hidden damage and/or mold issues that add to the cost of repairs. The owners of several of the trailers I looked at with soft rotted sections in corners slide floors said they had no idea they had a problem. Some of the water damage was slight, but as a buyer, I walked away if there was any water damage. Before you spend money on your trailer, you may want to be sure the roof or windows, etc. have not already leaked and you have hidden damage.

I would recommend anyone with an RV, and particularly a wood framed Teton, to err on the side of being overly obsessive in maintaining a weather tight roof and window seals, etc.

Yes we are new RV'rs, but I spent a lot of time looking at RV's. In my opinion, I don't think you can buy a new 5ver of the quality you have now in your Teton without spending way more than you would spend to maintain and remodel what you have. If it fit's you, and you don't have any rot issues, I think you should keep it.

We can't say enough good things about Truline RV. Chad and his brother are talented people and easy to work with.

Good info to have a current shopper compare pre-owned rigs. Thank you for posting.

Every year on DH B-day he would go up on the roof and re-caulk. When he could no longer go up we had a mobile tech we trusted go up and do it. We have known several Tetoners that had water damage over the years which encouraged our diligence in PM. We have only spent a couple winters in Florida and the rest of the time we have been in the desert so hoping the dryer weather is a positive.

Thank you for the review. We will not be too far from Spokane so may have an opportunity to check them out.

We put a lot of money into repairs on our old Arctic Fox and then finally sold it two years later. We would have been better off selling it sooner. HOWEVER, I agree that the rigs today are not what they were built like 10 years ago. Our old Arctic Fox was built better than the new one we bought last year. So do some shopping in the new market before making your decision.

They are a small shop and would rather turn business away than compromise quality. They did our residential fridge install and carpet removal/tile installation, among other things.

I'm new to this site, but will say this. My fifth wheel is a 2004 model, and I believe it is better made than most new ones. Notice I didn't say more modern or fancier . Also, if you are buying a brand new, high end RV, it could lose $6000.00 in value when you pull it off the lot. I'm sure the tags and insurance would also be higher. But, it's what something is worth to you that counts, and I would be the last person to say one decision is worse than the other. Hey, it's nice to be able to have to make the dscision! :), Good luck,
Jim

DW and I looked and shopped for over a year. Looked at new DRVs, Liftstyles, Excels, Landmarks, several mid range and none of them impressed us. Found this Teton and jumped on it. I would keep yours.
