What is your favorite RV Park activity?

Recommended Posts

I am the operating partner for Red River Ranch RV Resort in Thackerville, OK. We just had the pleasure of hosting the Red River Rovers Chapter of Escapees. Great group of folks BTW. We have been discussing activities that Full timer RVr's and weekenders would like to have both during the season and in the off season. We have received several great suggestions and hope that some of the members of this forum could provide us with additional input. Thank you in advance for your input.

You know you've arrive when the city limits sign says "Thackerville America"

We are wintering in Tucson, and the park here has an occasional park dinner. The park provides the meat and basic accompaniments and the guests sign up to bring side dishes and deserts. For example, on St. Patrick's day, the park did the corned beef, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, and the guests brought other side dishes, appetizers, and deserts. Last month it was Mexican food, with the park providing the burrito/taco stuff, and for Easter, the park is providing the ham and a couple of sides. The park also provides beer and wine. After dinner, we have games (cards, dominoes, etc.) and the guests get a chance to know each other better. We have made some good friends through these fun nights.

Are there RV Parks which allow campfires? I haven't been to one of those. That would be a deal breaker for me. Smoke from campfires have a way of magically finding my RV and forcing me to close windows and go inside.

Although we participate in selected activities at the park at which we spend the winter, we rarely participate in activities at parks where we're just spending a few days or even a week. We choose to stay in a particular area because there are things to see and do which interest us. We expect a park to provide a pleasant, safe environment for spending our nights, but we aren't expecting it to provide us entertainment.

It wouldn't work into an "activity" as such.. but as a CG "draw".. one of my favorite stops in a new area is always at local farmers/fish market/festivals/fairs. Kind of a one stop shop for fresh local delicacies, mom & pop shop specialty offerings, crafts, etc. It's been awhile, but one CG I would always frequent.. even during it's declining years.. had a small camp store that had (for sale) fresh daily local eggs, locally prepared bacon, ham, sausage, cheeses and fresh fruit for sale every morning and homemade soups in the late afternoon. It was always a treat to just walk up to the store and purchase fresh daily local fixings to hike back to camp for breakfast.

If a CG had a local "mini-market" highlighting a rotating group of local offerings.. I might be tempted to stop in. B)

A little locally made pie n' ice cream would certainly go really nicely with my sippin juice around the campfire. (Ken and wildmanmc got it right!)

Like Joel though.. I wouldn't expect to be entertained and it wouldn't be a "draw" for my business.

We visited a nice campground in Ohio that has created a lovely patio space that has a propane firepit. Its a place to just show up starting at happy hour and people can come and go until 9pm.

We aren't big on most of the typical activities (bingo, shuffleboard) but enjoy a space to drop in and work on hobbies. We have also enjoyed our time at a park that had a large whiteboard outside the office. People would post opportunities to socialize. Usually something like

"Interested in going to xxx for dinner? Meet here at 5pm"

" group going to local concert on (insert details) contact (name, loit# etc).

We also like to sit around a campfire, both morning, with coffee brewed over the fire, and in the evening with your choice of beverage. The park where we are currently at provides the firewood free at a community firepit. It does not have "activities", but the regular snowbirds here come up with their own activities. Cards, potlucks, pizza nights, hot dog roasts as well as going in groups to movies, casinos, restaurants. It is not the activities that will bring us in. It is the rate for the site, cleanliness of the facilities and the friendliness of the owner, workers and other campers that will make us stay longer. We also like a campground that has trees, bushes, birds, ponds ,lakes, streams and NOT the stripped down parking lot type facility.

When we full-timed we seldom entered into park activities if we were there for just a few days. But if we hit a potluck we were there! This was always a great way to meet new people and enjoy the local atmosphere.

We don't normally get involved with a lot of activities but one park had a HUGE outdoor movie screen and projector and had movie night and sold bags of popcorn for $1. I bet 300 people showed up for that and brought there own refreshments.
