I won't be there this winter but I love to go out with the metal detector and see what can be found. I'll take a raincheck though and put your number on a piece of paper. Of course I'll have to attach a piece of metal to it so I have a chance of finding it later ! Skuh kuh kuh kuh kuh

stay tuned

My son and I will be there 1/14 - 1/27. We will be staying at LaPosa North near the Big Tent. We belong to the RoadRunners Prospectors Club and they have several claims near Q. I'll keep your number and give you a call when we get there.

I'd be interested in coming by to take a look see? I have my original White's metal detector from 1972(Coin-Master IV TR) so seeing some of the latest and greatest machines in use would be educational plus the added benefit of Dry Washing. I'll check with you while in "Q" to see if that's possible.

Hi Dwain,

I have recently retired and one of the things that my DW and I are interested in is treasure hunting ... not that we'll ever find any but it would be fun. We have also recently purchased metal detectors and are looking forward to opportunities to learn and use them. We will arrive in Q on 1/18 ... depending on weather we're coming from the Boston area. We will be staying a Ameri-Can Trails through 1/22 and then boondocking for a few more days. It would also be a good opportunity for some off road 4 wheeling.

I don't know your timing but I hope our schedules work. I hope we have a chance to meet.

We have been here in Q the last 3 weeks but have done no prospecting. Actually would be lost without a sluice-box or at least a pan. With water in short supply here these tools aren't going to be deployed often (drove over to Blythe today to wash my truck). Good luck all you metal detector prospectors.

Later,

J

PS As of a few years ago folks were flying into Nome and still mining gold off the beach. Several beaches are doted with folks wearing hip-boots operating sluice-boxes either with a pump or using wave action. Reportedly those that stay at it find enough gold to finance their trip and working vacation.

Always wanted to prospect. For the first time we will be in Q the week of the big Rv tent and the week before. Concerned about leaving the camper alone. How do you feel about this? Anyone looking to congregate to "be a good neighbor" with watchful eyes? In case anyone is out looking for an easy mark.

Give me a shout.

thanks

Congregating sounds good. DW and I plan to be at Dome Rock(free BLM area) sometime the week before big show. Our rig is pictured below. If you see it parked there, please knock on the door and introduce yourself. Plan to do a little prospecting that week. Maybe some metal detecting. Maybe seeya then.

Saturday was the coin hunt for December for the QMDC. It was my first. There were about 150 people there. It was fun, lots of prizes besides the coins you find. I didn't make enough to cover the entrance fee but I think I did pretty good for a first timer. 62 coins in 60 minutes. I wish I could have watched other people but I was too busy. I haven't found any gold since I've been here But I'll keep looking. I'm getting plenty of excercise.

Man, that sounds like fun.

Going to be in Q around the same time, never been there except once a few months back at RoadRunner. Really green at boon-docking, but I wanna get out there!
I heard it could be chaotic that time of year!

Maybe see you guys.

Mopips, your rig should be easy to find.

On Wed. Jan 8th, the Q metal detectors club will hold a desert outing, not sure of location yet, but will post when I know. We get together and new people are always welcome to stop by. We do a hobo stew and have a few detector games. Last month we had a dry washer demo and a few of the people help the newcomers with how to set up their detectors to look for gold. The outings free, and we sell raffle tickets to make the day interesting. You get to meet lots of great folks and have some good conversations. You can PM me for more info on the outing and the club. The next board meeting is Jan 1, with a general meeting at the QIA that evening at 7pm. This month we have a guest speaker from the Univ of Calif at Berkeley, who is a prof of geology and has written books on prospecting gold in this area. The turn out when Dr. Melchiorre is speaking is tremendous . He is extremely interesting.

If anyone is in the area, stop by for the general meeting. Will probably last about 2-21/2 hrs. Free coffee and donuts served. We will also discuss the upcoming Jan coin hunt and the big gold and treasure show with coin hunt for Valentines weekend.

Dwain and Debbie....did the baby arrive yet? We are in El Cajon as well.

Kimberly the chaos is only in town when the shows are on. You will find the boon docking lifestyle pretty laid back even during that time.

  • 3 months later...

Planning our first trip to "Q" next January. Doing all the reading up I can since we don't know what to expect. Looks like a lot of fun. Have been work camping for 2 years now but green to boonedocking. Getting solar panels set up and acquiring the necessary items for fresh water and grey/black water handling. Looking so forward to it! Any input or advice would be appreciated.

Looks like a good thread to subscribe to. :) I should be in the Q around May-ish with hopes to do some prospecting. Never done dry diggin' before, but I've got my first little detector waiting to be broken in. Been thinking of making a dry washer as well, if I can figure out how the heck to fit it in the camper.

Good luck hunting in the spring and summer months. 100+ and rattle snakes. . Just to hot that time of year.

Ahh, but that's the best time! The snakes are there because they're attracted to the gold that's boiling to the surface. That's why you apply snake oil -- it keeps them away and keeps you cool at the same time.
