Another Direct TV question

Recommended Posts

We finally sold the house and are preparing to move into the rv on 6/19 if the closing goes well. we are on our 17th year with DTV and want to continue. I printed off the form to get Distant networks. It states that the antenna has to be attached to the rv and set on Sat 101 for up to 14 days. My question,( forget the legal aspects) I use a portable dish, Will this work? also would DTV know if I just left the receivers in the house connected to the house antenna to get the signal. this would only be temporary? (3 weeks) it would be so much simpler this way. also should I mail this form or fax it to make sure they get it?

Thanks guys for all the advice you have given over the years, time to make this dream happen now.

If you access your DirecTV account online there's a link for "reauthorizing" your receivers (I think each one has to be reauthorized separately). Even if yours happens to be offline when the DNS request is approved you should be able to get everything working properly by just using this link.

DirecTV has no idea what dish you are using or where the receivers are. I would do whatever is easiest. As Joel says, don't worry about them being on when the new channels are authorized. Usually it will happen anyway but if not, use the re-authorization function he mentions.

As for mail or FAX, I faxed mine, but that was many years ago.

CE,

We've been DTV customers for about 15 years. In 2003 we started traveling in our 5th wheel. We are not full timers but spend about 4 to 6 months on the road each year. We simply take the receivers out of our S&Bs house and use a portable antenna. We've never had any trouble with DTV about the location of the receivers. As indicated already they don't know where you are receiving the signal. Perhaps if we updated our "locals" they would have a general idea of where we are but we don't ever change the "locals".

We requested the DNS channels when we started RVing. At that time we were able to get both East and West coast channels. I believe now you can only get one coast and which coast depends on your address but I'm not sure about this.

We just faxed our DNS request and channels were turned on almost immediately. I don't know about the 2 week delay thing. Good luck and enjoy your upcoming adventure. Dennis

Yes.

They have no way of knowing the location of your receivers.

Fax it in. You'll get DNS up and running much sooner.

I have used DTV in my RV and Home since 2007. I have an in motion dish on my motorhome. If I leave the system on as I travel I seldom have to reauthorize unless I lose the signal for an extended period. With the exception of Alaska, I travel all over North America and can retain service. Alaska and parts of Canada are on the newer UV Bands and my older system is not compatible. With a portable or stationary system you may have to reauthorize if you move to another zone or are offline for an extended period of time. I have not completed the paperwork to obtain local channels when I travel and just settle for whatever I can pick up in the region I'm in. I have friends that are an additional receiver on someone else's account, that works as long as you do not need local info. I'm told that DISH will provide local channels with a phone call for free whereas DTV has drawn out process and a fee to provide local channels.

  • 2 weeks later...

Trying to navigate around this site to post a new question. Please forgive my weak use of computers. We have been full timing since Sept. 2014. We have DTV and our home base for our mobile account is in PA. We receive local channels out of NY. Now that we are in the west (UT) and plan to stay here for at least a year we wanted to get local programming from the west i.e. maybe San Diego. I called DTV and they told me that since my RV is registered in PA it's against the law and can not be done. Anyone else have a similar issue? or an idea on how to handle this? Anything would be appreciated.

W&W, just be aware that if you *were* able to change your DNS from the East Coast to the West Coast, that PST Prime Time starts at 8:00 PM...that would be 9:00 PM in Utah (since Utah is in MST). The three hours of Prime Time, therefore, wouldn't be over until 12:00 AM!

Now, if you're a night owl, or you record all your programs to watch at a later time, then the time zones wouldn't make any difference. Me, I'd leave my DNS on the East Coast station so that I could watch programs early (we don't have a DVR of any type). If you want local news, raise your bat wing antenna to pull in the local stations (if you're within range, of course).

FYI, to start a new topic of your own, open up the forum you want to put it (like this one, Satellite TV & Radio on the Road), and then click "Start New Topic" in the upper right-hand corner.

A Genie receiver will take care of the Eastern programs.

And then you can zip right through the commercials.

It may still be a Free upgrade. Ask them.

We love having the Eastern DNS feed and a Genie. We rarely watch anything in "real time" and when we're in TX in the winter it's sure nice that prime time is over by 10pm and "late night" shows begin after the 10pm news. Wouldn't ever want to have the western feed; when we are in the Canadian Maritimes on Atlantic Time, we'd be going to bed before anything came on! :D

After 18 yrs with DTV still having problems. Faxed in the form for DNS, got refused because they thought my fifth wheel was a car or truck. Re mailed the info again, highlighting on the registration where it shows this as a trailer. My account shows that the receivers are in the rv but no NY feeds. Now DTV wants me to resend the forms again, but we will not be stationary for at the 14 days they need to get this done. So I guess it is time to do without Satellite, unless someone has another suggestion.

I wonder how many times DTV would change my service address if I choose to go that route. For those that have used both Dish and DTV, is dish as bad as some say or is it a decent alternative to DTV?

Tired of the bureaucracy.

There are those who swear by both DirecTV and Dish, and there are also those who swear at both.

Seems you have had more than your share of issues getting DNS approved, but there is no reason not to begin your travels. You do not need to sit still and wait for DirecTV to turn on DNS. Once they turn it on, it will begin working immediately or the next time you power up the receiver. We've already mentioned this but you don't seem to believe us. Trust me when I say that those of us using DirecTV (or Dish for that matter) are more likely able to give you accurate information than many of the service reps from either company who answer their phones.

RIF, It's not a matter of not believing you, I actually take most everything you guys say as being the gospel. I had forgotten about them just turning it on, but My problem is how to convince them my fifth wheel is not a car.
