2008 Winnebago Destination Diesel Pusher

Recommended Posts

Help please. I am shopping for a Class A diesel pusher rig and have been looking at 2008 Winnebago Destinations, Itasca Latitudes etc. both 37g and 39w diesel models. Anyone have experience with this RV both positive or negative? I am new at this and don't want to purchase an RV that has known issues from the get go. It appears to have some rusting which I think plagues other Winnebago models from that time period. Is this a big issue? I also need advice on dealing with PPL in Texas, are they reputable?

We owned an 08 Destination, traded it for our current bus. We had the 39W floor plan.

Engine had to be serviced twice, once for a recall and once for a turbo resonator failure. The Cummins diesel got 12 mpg without a towed, around 9 towing a car. The four door refrigerator was a Norcold and we had several problems with it. I could run diagnostics on the front panel from memory! I now understand why that reefer earned the name Nevercold. We spent three weeks at Winnebago having the large slide repaired under warrenty, it would get stuck with about six inches still out.

But on the good side, we loved the room. It has a very nice floor plan. If it still has the original CRT TV, you will want to replace that heavy sucker right away, I think it's rated to weigh about 110 lbs. We replaced it with an LED tv in ours. I liked the Euro style cabinets, and the mid body door was convenient.

PPL is a consignment dealer with a pretty good rep. The prices are set by the owner with input from PPL. On the PPL web site there's a place to see what RV's have actually sold for. It's a good pricing tool.

If you buy from PPL, have the RV inspected by your inspector before you make an offer on the rig. Don't depend on PPL's inspection process. PPL's inspection process is limited to making sure the RV parts work, such as fridge, a/c, slideouts, furnace, etc. But it is not an in-depth inspection. They do not look for things that may be hidden or hard to find, such as leaks, wood rot. The engine/drive train in motorhomes and the chassis in trailers is not part of the inspection.

This is not meant to be negative about PPL. I have bought and sold multiple RV's through PPL and have always been pleased with the process. Much easier to work with and prices are generally better for selling and buying than with a RV dealer.

This is true for any RV sales organization because the selling location does not make one dime until you or someone buys the RV. They are paid on commission to reward them for selling it and are paid by the seller so it is their interest that they are bound to represent. They are not crooks, but just doing the job that they are paid to do.

Thank you everyone for the very kind help and answers to the questions in my recent Winnebago Destination post. Does anyone know of a reputable Houston based mobile inspector that I could contact? I tried googling this question and only found one person but they are located over 200 miles away.

I've done a little research on both Winnebago and Itasca. It seems that there has been a huge issue with windshields leaking. Apparently these issues go un-noticed for a long time until the metal that holds the windshield in rusts through and the windshield breaks. Repairs run around $3000.00. I don't have particulars on which models had/have these problems but it's something to know about when considering these units.

Try Google for more information.

Try searching for mobile RV repair, then ask about doing a detailed inspection, and their qualifications.
