Fueling in Indiana

Recommended Posts

In some past posts (older) it was noted that fueling in Indiana at the truck pumps caused some grief due to tax exempt pricing. I too had issues about 6 years ago in Indiana.

I stopped at a Pilot in Indiana and checked with them on what to do, It was pretty simple and worked just fine. Like at Pilots and Flying J in other states, with the Pilot/J /Good Sam credit card that has pump start enabled, I just did what I always do, swipe the card, enter PIN and pump fuel. It knows I am not exempt because of the RV card and it adjusted the price automatically.

Price on the sign for exempt $2.459 cash

Added for tax .14 per gal (Shown on Receipt)

Subtract .08 per gal good sam lifetime member discount'

Final price on receipt and on pump $2.519

I wanted to put some winter blend in before we headed up to Canada this week. It was cheaper here in Indiana than in Michigan by .38 per gal!! Even better we filled in Piedmont SC the other day for $2.41 with the good sam discount.

Hope this helps anyone looking to fuel in Indiana. At least at the Pilot/J with the card.

If you use the car lanes at Pilot/Flying J in Indiana. Price for tax is included in pump price.

Uhh, this is in the HDT forum, look at his sig. Car lanes are not an option.

Why not?

Dual 150 gallon tanks. When I'm pumping 200 plus gallons I want high flow pumps! Plus my 65 feet would not fit very well.

So, cars lanes are an option, but not your choice?

Normally, I too avoid car lanes. But sometimes it just makes sense. And while I like high flow nozzles, my time is not so valuable that I can't wait a few minutes. ;)

Ya no RV lanes at Pilot or J work for us either unless we want to get jammed up and not fill other tank.

But lots of pickups and MH are good to go.

Really the info is for using truck lane only

Rv Islands at Pilot/Flying J have slave pumps the same as truck lanes. ;)

And tanks on both sides can be filled with no problem.

I have seen many 40' plus MH pulling enclosed trailers able to use them with no problem.

But some of them do take some driving skills to get in and out of.

Maybe those HDT are a lot harder to maneuver and need those truck lanes.

I like using those RV Islands where you can pay at the pump and get a receipt.

And don't have to do that long walk inside and stand in line to pay. :)

While not trying to get all caught up in a debate on where to fuel and what pumps to use, this info I guess was for those of us that chose to use the truck lanes for whatever reason. Always a choice.

Curt: I respectfully disagree about Biker56 being off topic. I thought exactly the same thing about the RV lanes, and I have an HDT and often travel to IN. While I agree the original post was about information on how to handle the truck lanes, I, too, actively look for stations with RV or even auto lanes that are easy to pull through. Its just less hastle to me. Just be aware of two things: Auto diesel is often "elevated" in price beyond the tax difference....and watch for low canopies!

BTW--IN is not the only place where using the truck pumps as a non-professional driver can create confusion. Not the laws, the clerks. I stopped in a Pilot here in IL with my farm semi. "we need your truck # and ....." Sorry, I'm a private farmer and I just want to pay with a credit card. "We don't accept personal cards." WHAT??? I had to get the manager over and PREPAY for the fuel (they had to confirm the charge cleared) before they would let me fill up. Obviously I put in a minimal amount.

No camper at present.

Way too many farm machines to maintain.

Cheap shot...

Anyone should be welcome here, and his info was very valid... I used the car pumps many times with my HDT. and was ~65' long.

IMHO this is NOT an exclusive club.

The OP conversation was about fuel price in IN. stations. The best that I can tell. And I do know a little about fuel prices.

I also do know a little about IN. as I lived in the state for over 61 years. And still visit family and friends there every summer.

I very seldom buy fuel in IN. as I can fill up in KY or IL that is usually cheaper.

By my records on 5/12/13 shows I last bought in IN. at Flying J I465 Exit 4 RV Island and paid after my GS 8¢ discount $4.059 a gal.

Or if you are saying I truly know nothing about MTD's.

53 years ago I was driving one with a 12' wide trailer hauling all kinds of track vehicles all over Germany in those town small narrow streets.

And some of those like 105 Holitzers were wider then the trailer. Total weight at times was up to 78T or 156,000 lb.

Engines in tractor 9.5' wide were 844 cu in gas that got 1 to 1 1/2 MPG on a good day.

Sorry I got off topic Curt. But yours was also. :)

I never once had a problem with a F350 and trailer at a commercial pump. I always went in and prepaid, they asked me most of the times for the truck number, I tell them its a private RV and never had any issues between Texas and Maine.

I just tell them it is truck 101...... After a long run, I like to go in, get the pump started, stretch my legs and go back to wash the windshield while filling up. I prefer the truck lanes as I generally have more room and will always make sure I pull up to let the next guy get in to fuel while I am paying. I have never had a driver say anything other than one Pete driver that looked at my ride and said "cute little truck..".

What sets you apart from the commercial vehicle in IN is the DOT number. Indiana only collects 1/2 the tax at the pumps for comercial vehicles. It cuts down on the reimbursement to the IFTA program for overcharges as you are only supposed to pay tax on the miles you drive in the state. That said most every truck in the fuel island has the DOT number on the side. When the card reader asks for the ICC number put that in from the other truck. Now you just saved yourself the tax. I can't imagine that is exactly legal but the other company gets a credit and you get your fuel cheaper.

One time several years ago at a Northern IN. I65 Flying J when I had to use the truck pumps. They didn't have RV Islands.

I lucked out and punched in a made up ICC number when the pump asked for it.

Went inside to pay and no tax added. I still have that number saved.

Hint it is 5 numbers. :)

But have used only RV Island since with tax included.

Bob and Biker56;

I used to own an Airstream and was on their forum often. As I no longer own an Airstream I am not. I was pointing out the differences of using something daily/weekly as oposed to not. But I have been proven wrong by Jeff-C, my self I would never use the auto side at a station not somewhere I want to be ! I have an HDT because I know how to drive/work on it, most auto owners don't! So I stay away from their areas. Less headaches or incidents, that's why everyone cannot pilot an airplane. Some just run out of talent/brains. There are many things I have "been" considered an expert at, but as age creeps up the "been" comes more to light. I was not excluding anyone from our forum, but I do not go into my doctors office telling him I watched a TV show detailing heart surgery and now i can take his job!

I am not here to offend, but you will get the truth from me every time. (Even if it hurts)

That overweight bit is for a shipper. I don't see that it applies to me as I am not a shipper.

Not true. The federal interstate weight laws apply to commercial vehicles. State weight laws apply to all vehicles. Most states are real close to the federal regs, Texas for example, is identical. Connecticut it seems will allow a little more on a single axle....as long as you are not on the Interstate.
