Tubes of caulking?

Recommended Posts

Has anybody come up with a way to keep an open tube of caulking from getting hard from the tip on down to the tube? I have tried numerous things, Saran Wrap, screw bolts or screws into the tip, electric wire nuts, etc. I remember a number of years ago when GE Silicon caulk had a screw in tip and also a screw in plug. It worked very well. I just bought a tube that has a push-on cap. Shoot it doesn't even have any ridges to help it stay on the tip. It just falls off.

My favorite solution is to use the foil duct tape along with a screw. Place the screw in the end and then wrap tightly with the foil tape. It wont keep the tube "fresh" forever but will certainly work for several months (or that has been my experience).

I have not tried the little red caps but I think I may....

I cut a wire clothes hanger into pieces about 6" long and put a hook on the end. Coated wire works better for the thickness.

When I am done using the tube, I stick the wire down the nozzle and wrap paper towel around the tip. When I need to use the tube again, I pull the wire which leaves a hole in the nozzle.

The little red does look promising. I have tried most home methods except storing in the freezer and doubt that Pam would be thrilled with that idea. Looking on Amazon I have found three caps that seem to have promise so has anyone tried the other two types?

I must say that any of these would probably be an improvement over my track record for keeping partially used caulking tubes!

For the typical 10.1 oz caulking gun type, if you have access to an air compressor, use it to blow the caulk out of the nozzle & back into the tube. I've also found standing a tube of self leveling caulk on end so the nozzle is facing up let you use it a couple more times...

I have a friend that has a couple of sets of the yellow caps with the shafts and seems to be happy overall with them. I haven't been able to find any of these (yellow ones) at HD or Lowes. Guess I'll have to get online and order some, unless someone has a better idea. I read and saw pix of reviews on the red condom types. They claim to work fine short term but rot and fall into pieces in short order. The caulk and silicone must not get along. Just FYI rockin'

I've had good luck with black plastic electrical tape, put two strips over the tip in an X - pull them tight. Then wrap another strip around their ends to keep them from lifting from the tension.

Might not work as well as some of the fancy options but you'll likely have some handy when needed.
