We are thinking about being in Texas tomorrow . Now I really think Big 5r would like a Dr Pepper . So he will be the cat and we will be the mouse.

So what route should we take to avoid the by chance meetin of the cat.

He may not even be working tomorrow. Yea and no Buccees either.

There have been people on this forum issued citations for 68ft. There have been many, many more that have not. How strict is Texas? Probably no more or less strict than any other state. Over length is illegal. So is speeding. How many of those get caught? You play the game and take your chances, just like everything else.

I have a request to build a custom air hitch from a customer. The fifth will be finished by the end of April. The pin weigh is estimated to be 13K, weight 40K+, the length 57 feet. The pulling vehicle something like a Dynamax configured to pull a fifth. I would guess(?) it will be over 65 feet.

Phil is right here. Just because it has happened, doesn't mean the odds of it happening are high--for speeding or being over length. Just fly through to minimize the odds of the officer being free to stop you.

Hey Phil,

Just as a point of future reference, can a guy take 8 around the city to avoid the Grinch?

No...he worked the west side of my county....between the Beltway 8 and the county line. Hwy 99 (The new outer, outer loop) won't work either.

Shucks.....just drive around Texas ....it's just a bit smaller than.....Alaska.....gulp.

On second thought....the potential ticket and a case or two of Dr Pepper just might be a bargain compared to the cost of driving around Tex.....

Drive on.....(enjoy the .....Drive)

Big sucker of a state, going to Arizona few years back we tried to make it across the wide part (not the pan handle) in one day.18 hours later we quit about 100 miles short of the western border. On the way back got "invited" to Retama and did the thousand miles down the western side of the Mexican border, Saw only four small piddly towns along the way and occasional wild pigs, Why did we bother to take this land from the hombres?

No the other night we were in Texas. DW always wants he steps so she can leave them out. That means there is no trucks beside you.

So she gets up in the middle the night to visit the potty. And then looks out the window.

There's a cop checking us out. Turns on the lights an d siren

And he leaves.

Today I did see several trucks with single tires on the front axle of triple axle trucks at a trainers in Texas.

I see them all the time too Vern. Many of them are MADE that way, some are not. It's kinda like speeders. You can point them out all you want, but it doesn't make speeding legal.

Is the fine by the inch or foot? Or is it a flat fee?

Some states seem fairly laid back many traffic and vehicle laws and for the most part Oregon is fairly easy, however one point that seems a bit tender is RV towing double trailers.....the bears get a toaster or something for each double RV rig they pinch.

Do they pinch folks just to get a toaster, of course not....much of Oregon is crossed by fairly substandard old twisty steep biways ill suited for most double towed RV rigs and some RV operators.

Just one of those cases where the really IS a real reason to pay attention to the law.....or you might get to pay up.

Always wondered what the bears did with all those toasters....

Drive on.....(Tex ...hard to drive around it)

I don't know of any off the top of my head that are graduated like the weight regulations. And size and weight aren't covered by the NRVC, so a non-Texan shouldn't worry about it nearly as much as a speeding ticket. And South Dakotans don't need to worry about those much either (or photo enforcement tickets).

Here's the Texas penalty section:

Sec. 621.507. GENERAL OFFENSE; PENALTY. (a) A person commits an offense if the person violates a provision of this subtitle for which an offense is not specified by another section of this subtitle.
( An offense under this section is a misdemeanor punishable:
    (1) by a fine not to exceed $200;
    (2) on conviction before the first anniversary of the date of a previous conviction under this section:
        (A) by a fine not to exceed $500, by confinement in a county jail for not more than 60 days, or by both the fine and confinement; or
( if the convicted person is a corporation, by a fine not to exceed $1,000; or
    (3) on a conviction before the first anniversary of the date of a previous conviction under this section that was punishable under Subdivision (2) or this subdivision:
        (A) by a fine not to exceed $1,000, by confinement in the county jail for not more than six months, or by both the fine and confinement; or
( if the convicted person is a corporation, by a fine not to exceed $2,000.

Max $200 and no jail time (not that they would anyway--the local court would rather have the cash) isn't worth a detour.
