Dog in towd.

Sitting at a stop light yesterday behind a gas class A pulling a towd here in Florida. When suddenly a dog popped up inside the towd. It was like a Golden Retriever type dog. So I was wondering how many people with dogs travel with them in their towd and not the motorhome? I've read about cats traveling in 5th wheels what about dogs? Mine ride in the motorhome with me.

If it isn't illegal, it's likely not a good practice. Even setting aside the fact that animals poop and pee, it's just unsafe due to how the interior of vehicles can heat up, even in colder months and colder locations.

Restrain the critter with the appropriate restraint inside the Class A.

I'd expect that the instant you park you'd be subject to any local "dogs in parked cars" rules and that can get expensive and cost you custody of your dog.

Going down the road I'm not sure what laws apply but I'd also not want to find out, likely to be expensive.

TxCowboy's point about heat issues in the toad is a good one and something to be considered if putting the critters in a fiver too. We kept track of the temps in our fiver (wireless thermometer) when we were in hot country and were prepared to move the cats to the truck no matter how much they hated riding there if things in the fiver got too hot.

We almost killed our cat on one trip, he was in our van with us as we crossed Death Valley in late summer, no air conditioning and he got badly overheated. We ended up soaking a towel in the water in our ice chest and covering him with it. Never expected to see that feisty fellow consent to being covered with a wet, cold towel but he was so stressed he put up with the initial application and several refreshes to keep it cool. I did fine but the wife suffered badly and it was the last straw on our camper van, traded it for something with air conditioning soon after.

We would never have our dog travel in a toad. It could get stifling hot in there, as well as cold depending on the weather. With the dog in the Class A, you will know if they are sick, need to go potty etc. Easy to forget them when they are out of sight.

Maybe the dog had a bad case of gas ? Seriously, I would doubt whether there are any laws prohibiting such behavior...after all, animals travel in trailers all the time....some are specially designed for that purpose. Most folks have the common sense to be mindful of the animals welfare in times of extreme weather, but leaving an animal unattended in a closed/parked vehicle would be sure to attract scrutiny. In this country, we humans tend to treat our pets better than humans are treated in other less affluent countries.

Way back when, during the back-to-the-land movement, my family left Ca for the mountains of AR....2 adults a 4 year old and a new born...all in the cab of a 24' U-Haul truck...way before seat belt laws. There was no room for the Border Collie...so he had the entire cab of the 1 ton flat bed truck we were towing. He got out when we stopped, had water and food, and plenty of room to move. I'm sure there were plenty of stares as we were passed on the road, and he was sitting up behind the steering wheel looking at the passersby. Bottom line he survived, was as safe as any critter can be in a towed vehicle, and I'm sure he enjoyed the trip better with room to stretch out.

After I passed the RV I only saw a woman driving. She may have been by herself. I didn't think it was illegal just different. I believe there were Florida tags on the RV and towd.

We've not owned a towd behind a MH but I believe our dog would have liked it. He was raised on a ranch and often stayed in the truck when things didn't require his help. He was comfortable in a vehicle but not our 5er when left alone. Once we went to lunch with friends and I tied him to a nice shade tree off to the side of the rual restaurant. Before we could order he was looking in the door at us. He chewed through his leash. It was cool so we put him in the truck with the windows down. He just went to sleep and waited for us. He was comfortable in a vehicle.

At one time we had a pick-up camper and the dog insisted in traveling in it, not the cab. We bought a trailer and the same dog would run to the trailer...not the truck. I know neither of those are not as confined as a car so the dog has a lot more air and space...but if the owner is aware of the space, weather, etc...may we shouldn't be too fast to judge.

If I were that dog. I would bite her for locking me in a car.

No different than leaving a animal or child in a parked car while youn go off shopping.

Beleave a call to 911 would hve been my choice. Get the licence tag #.

Who knows, maybe the dog really likes riding back there. Dogs and cats have personalities and likes/dislikes all their own, you never know. I'm certainly not advocating forcing the pet to ride in the toad, but I'm not gonna judge because I don't know the details.
