New diagnostic tool

Gave mine to the youngest boy. He has it tn a toolbox drawer, somewhere. They do what they claim, but they don't make me talk in a breathless fashion about them. Cheaper ways of doing the same thing, but they do make a convenient package, if a bit large for the most common uses.

I have been wrong before, I'll probably be wrong again.

Saturday was my last day at the show, got what I needed. Sunday, no driving, I'm fried. I'm staying in Bushnell till 24th then off to Melbourne for 10 days or so.

Thanks for the offer, Randy has one as well.

I want to see Randy's newest surgery and practice Spica bandaging.

GH, was that you at the end of the row at Bushnell with the nifty dolly for the trailer?

You were by the hiway last year, am I right.

I'm trying to put a face to a name.

When a diagnostic tools doesn't give any specs, it's a pass for me. I'll stick with my VOM.

Specs for the Power Probe are not what one would expect when shopping for a VOM. It is essentially an instrument designed for 12 volt DC systems that is great for tracing problem circuits - especially those that have bad grounds or an open positive wire. You really need to add the probe kit that will puncture a wire with a small needle. Each test instrument in my arsenal has a specific purpose that is not easily accomplished with another instrument. The Power Probe is just one of many.

Use mine weekly and it's a real time saver. Another tool they make is the "Smart circuit tracer" https://www.powerprobe.com/ppect2000/ Allows you to find problems you can't see in literally mins!

RandyA,

I know you're the man when it comes to electrical diagnostics, but I'm still just seeing it as a test light and a VOM. Nothing I couldn't do with a long length of wire and my VOM with the small fortune in probes I have. A wire tracer... that's where I'd see value.

Thermal imaging is not something I have. I can see where it would be a great diagnostic and preventive maintenance tool but right now it is somewhat beyond my budget. Glad you have it and would like to hear how you use it and the results. I've been enjoying experimenting with the Arduino. At $10.86 each I now have several. Lots of potential for a small investment. I have some ideas for projects related to the Volvo using some of the many, many available sensors. I believe I can create an inexpensive diagnostic tool and component monitor that exceeds what is in the data stream from the EECM. It is all about time and interest.

I hear ya Randy! I'm lucky in that my business allows a budget that isn't much of a concern in regards to tools that give me the ability to diagnose problems while saving time. Hoping I just added another 20 mins of free time to my work week! At $32.44wk in extra billed labor, it's a 31 week payback minus depreciation!

Wish I had the time to play with the Arduino stuff! I don't even have a working base station anymore since the roof/solar went up on the house. Might have to install that crank up tower now!

Randy Are you going to be at the ECR? I had a boy do some electrical work on our Volvo and he had the Power Probe. i thought it was a great and really useful tool. It really made short work fixing my issues. Pat
