RVing and bike trails

RV Triking

Recommended Posts

Hi...

I'm new here and just recently bought my first travel trailer. ( A Starcraft AR-One)

I would like to compile a list of campgrounds that have a paved bike path/trail directly adjacent to the campground. I live in Ohio, but am interested in this setup anywhere in the lower 48 states.

Recumbent trike riding is our favorite pastime, so i thought what could be better than combining it with another great pastime, RVing!

Thanks for any suggestions,

Dave

Welcome to the Escapee forums! It's great to have you be a part of the gang here and we'll do our best to help and support.

As to parks that have readily available bike trails, there are quite a few of them so I suggest that you pick a state and visit their website and try some searches on bike trails. One that we have spent time in which offers a lot more than just bike trails would be Ft. Stephens State Park, in Oregon. In Texas the state parks have a listing of parks that offer bike trails and each of those trails is rated by difficulty. The Kansas state parks have a listing of bike trails in the state parks, giving the location and length of the trail. Yet another such state with bike trail listings is Wisconsin. While not all states offer this, it is worth your time to do some searches of states where you plan to travel.

An aside to your post is, per the dictionary bikes are actually RV's too.

Thanks Kirk!

I have found tons of state parks that offer bike trails, but most that I've located are mountain bike trails. I'm searching for the campgrounds that have paved trails that come right to the campground. We ride recumbent trikes. They are best used on pavement, and we would rather not ride on roads to get to them. I just checked out Brunsje's suggestion of the KOA at San Antonio. That one looks perfect for my list. I'm sure many members here have experienced similar trails.

We're in Ohio and would like to find some here in the Midwest, but I appreciate finding them anywhere.

Duck Creek Resort in Muskegon Mi. has a trail that runs right behind the campground, I think you can get to it from the entrance not sure if you have to go on the road at all.

To bad it looked real nice, I do not think it was real far from the entrance no way to walk them. We walked to Michigan Adventures across the street but it was mostly the parking lot.

Arizona Sands RV Park sits along side one of Yuma's irrigation cannels. The cannel system is extensive and though not a bike trail per say you can enjoy many, many, many miles of biking on their dikes. Lots of folks use them to bike between various outlets. We very much enjoyed this areas relatively flat network of dikes for biking.

PS A great area to winter.

I believe Sleeping Bear Dunes Nat'l Lakesore, Michigan has just put in a new paved biking path. You could stay at Platte River campground in the park. We've volunteered there many seasons and it's a beauty of a park.

Near Kalamazoo, Michigan is the Kal-Haven Trail which we've done. Not sure if it connects to a campground though.

There is this place called Prince of Tucson that is adjacent to a path called "The Loop" in Tucson. Many miles of paved path, even some four lane areas. The path follows washes so it is a real flat ride. There is even a bike shop / coffee shop right on the path just north of the RV park a couple miles.

That looks like a very nice area.

The 2 criteria that I am trying to meet is 1) that it is paved & 2) that it can be reached from the campground without riding on roads.

Do you know if this one can be reached from the campground?

Thanks, I really appreciate all the input!

Check Google Earth. The path is well marked with a yellow skip dash and comes within 50 ft of the park entrance. You go right out of the park to the west and cross a street with zero traffic to catch the path. Then you can make a day of it exploring. Anything you want is right off this path, malls, food, snacks, bike shops, parks, horse racing (in season), movies, fast food places.

Indiana State Fairgrounds RV Park on 38th St. in Indy. The Monon bike trail goes along side the park, paved, takes you out to the Broad Ripple area and also towards downtown. Some folks say the area isn't safe but we never found it that way.

Nicest one I found was at El Dorado State Park, Kansas. The campground right below the dam has paved bike trails which run into the campground and follow the river right through downtown. You can stay on the protected scenic trail or get off several places to enjoy downtown parks and restaurants, etc.

Loved my recumbent two bike! We stayed at the KOA in Gunnison CO many other bikers in the area willing to give a newbie the scenic tour of Ohio Creek and other beautiful riding options. I tried to make it from Gunnison to Crested Butte during my 3 month stay going a little further each ride but that one was too tough for me!

Also great riding from Valle Del Oro and other near by parks in Mesa AZ. Maricopa biking.

Valle Del Oro as well as other Cal Am Parks in the Phoenix area are running special for less than $7.50 a day from September through December if you sign up for their special for that four months.
