AZ MDT Registration - UPDATE

Been full timing for 16 years driving an International 4700 MDT with Florida registration using standard drivers license. Decided to stop full timing and change resident to Arizona. Went to DMV in Yuma, AZ to change registration and drivers license. They were adamant that a CDL was required. Not only that, but in my driving test using my MDT, I could not tow my fiver. I had to locate a flat bed trailer to tow. Have decided for the time being to to stay with Florida.

Anyone else registered a MDT in Arizona?

UPDATE

In AZ, if you are registering a truck that has a GVWR of 20,001 lbs or higher, you are required to have a CDL. As it turns out, when Weirs converted my "cab/chassis" truck to a "RV Hauler", they re-certified the truck to a GVWR of 20,000 lbs instead of 20,001 lbs and placed a sticker on the driver's side door jam. I had never noticed this change. Florida did not ask when I registered my truck there. I took a picture of the sticker and showed it to DMV personnel. My wife and I are now Arizonans with AZ Drivers License and have our car, truck and fiver registered in Arizona.

Same reason we are staying registered in Illinois! They will not recognize motor home registration for Volvo and do not offer a non-CDL like my Illinois class A.

We have a 2015 Sportchassis registered in Arizona. When I was waiting for the Certificate of Origin to arrive I needed a temp permit. I the first lady at DMV said she couldn't help me and sent me to a Arizona truck inspection station because she said it was a commercial rig. Apparently she couldn't get past the word Freightliner in the sale receipt. The commercial folks were very helpful, they were all commissioned officers, and said DMV was nuts, gave me a non commercial permit and a number for DMV to call if they gave me any more grief, and to ask for a supervisor when I went to register the truck. DMV then registered it as a 2 axel flat bed truck, and no CDL required. You probably got someone who didn't known what she was doing. If I were you I would you go by a truck scale talk to an officer and ask for help.

We had a similar problem with the AZ DMV folks many years ago. Well two problems, they don't know their jobs and they lie.

That said you should be able to register your MDT in AZ with no issues and no commercial driver's license.

If you try it in an emissions area (not sure about Yuma but Phoenix is) be prepared to pay what I recall was a high testing fee.
