cancel contract with DISH or DIrect TV

Recommended Posts

They have you pretty well locked in on a contract...so no way out even with a Philly Lawyer. If you are unsure, go with a month to month plan and buy your receiver and antenna from any one of a number of sources.

We own our equipment and have a RV only account so there's no contract, we just go month to month with Dish.

Throughout the years we've been both DirecTV and Dish customers, changing from one to another at various points. We've never had difficulty closing the account with one when we went with the other (always after the initial contract was over). They do try to keep you as a customer, so you may be on the phone for awhile trying to convince them you're serious about cancelling the account, but they've always done so for us.

If you are not currently a customer of either, then, as others have said, you might consider using Dish's month-by-month, no contract, plan (DirecTV doesn't offer this).

Both services use a two year contract to insure enough subscription fees to cover the inital cost of getting you as a customer (dish, receiver, DVR, etc.) After the two years, you can just walk away.

The advantage of a contract is not purchasing the equipment and rolling the equipment with technology changes.

But I can't get a pathway X2 with a contract. Still got to buy so what to gain.

Well, your VIP211 receiver is under $100 street price while a Hopper is at least twice that. Plus, when Hopper 2 or whatever comes out and you want to upgrade, your old Hopper that you bought becomes a paperweight.

Well a Hopper will only work with a Traveler and don't want that. Definitely don't want to set up a dish every time I move. So again, what's to gain.

Depends on the Traveler. With our roof mount I just push one button, and it automatically locks onto the sat.'s. Unless of course a tree jumps in front of it.

With a 2-year contract as a new subscriber, you would be eligible for various programming discounts, price lock, etc. Most discounts only apply to the first year though.

Depends on your tools for setting up the dish. For 6-1/2 years, I set up a tripod satellite TV dish and a HughesNet satellite Internet dish on every move including just one night stops. Total time average 40 minutes, enough time to let the boss setup the inside of the trailer. We move an average of 40 times a year.

We wouldn't be without a multi-LNBF dish, because the two TVs are seldom on the same satellite.

Now we have a Trav'ler and only have to use the tripod when the trees are too bad, about 3 times a year. And a 4G air-card has replaced the HughesNet. Now I have to wait around for the boss to finish setting up the inside.

Call me lazy, whatever. I don't care to set up any dish anymore. I have set up hundreds. Have set up 5 lnbs on a 30 inch dish. As long as they make portable dishes I won't anymore.

So go with whatever makes you comfortable as the days of satellite are coming to an end. There might be 5 or ten years left.

That is right up there with the end of Over-The-Air transmission, which is still here. There are big parts of this country without broadband Internet, outside of satellite. Just what is going to replace satellite television?

As stated, it is difficult to get out of the contracts. I do see however that Dish is now offering one with a two year price lock. So go with whatever makes you comfortable as the days of satellite are coming to an end. There might be 5 or ten years left.

In technology terms, five or ten years is........forever.

The smart money is on LEO satellites and Drones. Google just bought into Space X to the tune of 10 billion dollars and Facebook has their money on Drones which can stay up for several years. Fast high speed internet that will be available no matter where you are is in the near future. Why else would Dish network open an IP Tv (Sling TV) company to compete against themselves. It costs hundreds of millions to put a sat in geo synchronous orbit and they are only good for a few years (10). Yes, I know. It will never happen just like there will never be cars that drive themselves. Did anyone watch 60 minutes. Things are changing and the changes are coming soon.
