Simple, basic Dish setup?

Recommended Posts

We had Directv in S&&b, carried receiver and G2 dome when traveling. Cancelled when we went FT, now after some time without satellite TV, we are thinking of signing up for Dish service. (Just our experience, never happy overall with Directv customer service, ymmv). Is it simply a matter of buying a receiver, calling Dish network to activate service, and running cables? Or......is it more complicated than that? We dont want DVR, additional receivers, etc.

You can use your G2 and get a VIP 211 HD receiver for around a hundred bucks.. Set the dip switches on the G2, initilize the receiver and call Dish to get an acct.

It's been six years so I don't know how or what they have you do to become an RV account now..

We use a 211K Dish receiver with a Tailgater but if my Tailgater quits I will look at a X2. We have a RV only account so changing locals has been hassle free for us. Setup is easy because it's automatic, you just need have a clear view of the southern sky.

The RV account is Pay-As-You-Go for part-timers. It allows you to only pay for the months you need Dish. You have to have purchased equipment.

If you are going to use the Dish subscription all the time, just be a regular subscriber and get a free receiver. You would still need the TailGater 2 is you want an auto dish.

Dish will give you a free dish if you want to go the tripod route. You would need to buy tripod.

When Distant Network Services was available (New York, LA everywhere), there was RV registration but that is no longer available.

I've been using our RV account year round four 4 years, we have always owned our own equipment so we can turn it off anytime we wanted to, the RV account just gives you more freedom and less when hassle when it comes to service address and changing locals.

Been using it for a long time. My account is flagged as RV. I call, ask for the RV dept. and get straight to a senior tech..

Why would he need a tailgater? He has a G2 now so you remove the dome flip some microswitches and you're done.

They don't "give" you a receiver, they charge you for it every month either $7 or $10. So, you pay for a VIP 211K in under a year.

He simply needs to get a receiver, set the G2 for Dish and call in to activate it.

Dish charges for receiver access whether you own them or not. Unless you use Pay-As-You-Go, there is no financial advantage to buying receivers/DVRs.

We have been registered as an RV with Dish since 2006, because of DNS. I don't know if that has any meaning now when you change locations.

One thing, if registered as RV, you can't have the Protection Plan.

We have a sticks-and-bricks account and take one of our receivers with us when we head south for the winter. Our account is not flagged as an "RV" account, yet we can change our service address at any time, and have been doing so for the past couple of years (or however long it's been since the 3rd-party DNS provider went out of business and we lost our DNS). I use the Chat feature to change our service address rather than calling on the phone.
