Pre-emptive strike?

Hello all....

We have been RVing for about 40 years, having gone through the tent, pop-up, truck camper, class c, class a, and are now waiting on a class b. While waiting, we have a 2016 Forest River Clipper trailer. I have had really terrible experiences with Coachman (owned by Forest River) and I don't want the same problems to occur on this trailer. Soooooooo....

Is there any problem with using Eterna-Seal(?) tape to cover all of the seams, edges, etc on the roof of this trailer? I know it is only a year old, but I had leaks in my Coachman (all of them) within a year of purchase. So, I thought I'd clean the areas really well, and apply a layer of this tape over the old sealant, which still seems to be working well.

Thanks for the help...

No problem at all. The best time to apply Eternabond tape is before you've had any leaks!!

The cleaning of the existing roof is really important. I used the Eternabond cleaner/primer on mine several years ago and it has stayed well bonded.

Agreed! It's one of the first orders of business for me on any new/new to me rig. I've never had to re-caulk a roof seal and the peace of mind is more than worth the initial price tag.

Just a suggestion. I generally purchase from mobilehomesolutions on ebay. His stuff is generally the "freshest". I purchase in as wide of tape that I can and cut down strips as needed. It seems to be the most cost effective and allows me to use wider or narrower tape depending on the location.

Check the prices here https://www.bigrocksupply.com/eternabond.htm

When we did our 5th wheel they had very good prices and a good selection.

But they want $16 to ship it. It is cheaper on amazon, $52.14 shipped, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002RSIK4G/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AYEHOMR60KRI9

At least in a 4x 50 white tape.

Your state might very because of tax also.

I am looking at doing this on my 2016 MS to get ahead of any leaks.

Some consider this overkill, but when we EternaBond'd the front and rear caps seams of or Bounder, I first did a complete scrape and clean and then applied self leveling Dicor. Let that set a few days, did another cleaning, then applied the EnternaBond, covering the fresh Dicor. Sort of double insurance. We had small wallpaper rollers, and they did great and getting the tape down solid. Don't be afraid to utility knife cut an bubbles to help press things down tight. I also went along the leading/forward edge of the tape, and applied a bead of sealant.

Best of luck to you,

Smitty

You do want to apply a bead of sealant on the edges of the eternabond. I believe that is even in their instructions. As others have said - if you are going to do this - do it right. Use the primer and follow the instructions. On a new RV if there are huge "globs" of dycor on the seam I generally remove them to be more level.

Thanks to one and all... .I ordered the sealant tape and primer from Amazon with their free shipping it came to about $82..... much much cheaper than fixing a leaking roof. Now, when I get my Class B, I'll have the experience to do the same to that roof....

You should find the Eternabond video library helpful-before applying the tape.
