Oil leak at valve cover hose

I noticed this leaking today. Were does this hose go and what does it do?

What engine do you have ?

2012 Volvo VNL 630 w/ I-Shift; D13 engine; " Veeger "
  Redwood, model 3401R ; 5th Wheel Trailer, " Dead Wood "
    2006 Smart Car " Killer Frog "

Alan,

 

2007 VNL 780 so would suspect D12 looking at valve cover and color know it's a Volvo.

Breather hose....vents to atmosphere under truck. Charlie

Why little oil around it? Is that normal?

Look at the top of the cover. It says "olvo". I'm betting its a Cummins. :D

Suite-

 

The hose relieves the little bit of combustion gas that escapes past the piston rings.

 

Without it, the gas would build up until parts blow off the engine like oil seals.

 

It has no pressure or liquid in it, so take hose off, clean up surfaces, check hose clamp, check that hose isnt plugged, and put back, maybe with some oil resistant rtv sealant if you dont like leaks.

 

There may be a sponge looking thing inside the valve cover. Clean it or change it if you can get at it.
